THE GOLDSTARS – Gotta Get Out!, CD

Pravda Records, PR 6379, 2003, USA

The Goldstars come from Chicago, USA and this CD is their debut appearance. 12 songs of pure and wild garage punk with lotsa guitar and organ ala Fuzztones! In fact, there a couple of songs in this album that really made me think of the ‘In Heat’ period of The Fuzztones, like ‘Hurry Up And Wait’ and ‘She Don’t Like’ but generally the album is in the garage punk genre with some elements of 70’s Detroit (this doesn’t mean that they sound like The Stooges). And how wouldn’t they sound garage when the Goldstars are covering 3 garage punk classics from the 60’s era: ‘Open Up Your Door’, ‘I Think I’m Down’, ‘Run Run Run’. The Goldstars were formed by Skipper (organ/bass), Goodtime (drums), who were in The New Duncan Imperials and Sal, ex-member of a pop outfit named The Krinkles. After a couple of guitarist misfires the band joined Dag Juhlin, ex-member of The Slugs. Gotta Get This CD! M3n

THE INDIKATION – In Terms Of…, CD

Teen Sound Records, TEENS 026, 2004, Italy

The long awaited debut album by The Indikation is finally out! The Indikation have been around for at least 2 years since they put out their first 45 on Larsen Records. They did create a very good reputation with their following 2 45s on Screaming Apple and Larsen Records and normally the album followed. The result is brilliant. This album is wonderful, full of freakbeat, pop and RnB music recorded in Toe Rag studios in London by whom else but Liam Watson himself. Mr. Watson is again responsible for a high quality sound record though it isn’t the high standards of sound that makes this album perfect. It’s mostly the ability of each one Indikation members starting from Per Oydir (organ/piano), whose compositions in here stand above the rest: Songs like ‘Looking At You’ (composed in collaboration with Frode Skjold, guitar/vocals), ‘London Electricity’ (with Thomas Jamt Roaas – drums), ‘Go To Tell Them’ and ‘By My Side’ are simply remarkable. The same ability in compositions is not a charisma only for Per but for the other members of the band like Peder Bernhardt (vocals/harmonica/percussion) who is responsible along with Thomas for the album opening freakbeat/pop song titled ‘Search your Heart’ and the up tempo beatlesque beat titled ‘I Can End Your Misery’, which is one of the best moments of the album, for its tempo, harmonies and organ groove. I don’t have to be unrighteous with the bass player, Christian Brodsjo, who may not have any of his own compositions in here but it’s more than obvious that its his ability along with Thomas that offers The Indikation this tight and strong rhythm beat. The album includes overall 12 songs from which the half of them is covers and it’s going to be out in vinyl too in March (why not the Acid Lemon album too, Massimo?). ‘In Terms Of…’ is the best beat album since The Embrooks ‘Our New Day’ on Voxx Records! You can listen it to it at 6.00 AM either you just woke up or you are on your way home after hangin’ out! POP in terms of The Indikation, that is, of course! If you need some satisfaction, The Indikation got the action!!!

THE ACID LEMON – Introducing, CD

Teen Sound Records, TEENS 027, 2004, Italy

After a great song (‘No More’) that was included in the Misty Lane’s CD compilation last year, here is the debut 8-track album by this new Italian band. The Acid Lemon are a truly 60s inspired garage punk band and obviously much talented. Paolo Messina, formerly 99th Floor member, who sings and plays the lead guitar, stands as a guarantee for the perfect result. The Acid Lemon’s other members are: Bobby Siconolfi – drums, Luca Reolon – guitar/backing vocals, Carlo Roagna – bass and Simona Chigo – farfisa.  The album consists of 5 originals and 3 covers (The Electric Prunes - Get Me To The World On Time, Liberty Bell – I Can See, Tonto & The Renegades – Little Boy Blue) and I have to say that I prefer all the originals, which are authentic 60’s garage punk, wild and loud! Pity that is only a CD release. On the back sleeve of the CD, Tom Kirby from the 60s legends, Tonto & The Renegades, writes some liner notes about the Acid Lemon: ‘I suggest that you keep your eyes and ears open for this band. Acid Lemon represents the power of the 60’s movement as a modern day band and they are keeping the 60’s alive…for today and for the future. Rock On!’  Do you need more…?
