V/A Enjoy
The Greeks!, CD compilation On Stage Records, OSR004, 2004, Greece Heres a great compilation with fresh new garage/surf/beat/psyche/pop bands from all over Greece! 15 bands and 22 songs in one CD that released by a new label too from Thessaloniki, Greece, which has also put out The Overtones and The Bullets 45s last year. These two bands arent missing from in here too and they deliver 3 more great instro manic tunes to shake your feet. Thessalonikis famous garage punkers, The Frantic V, are included in here too with a stomping farfisa drenched tune, titled Im Asking Why. Another cool garage punk band in here are the Teddy Boys From The Crypt that locate in Athens and offer two garage punkers titled: Minidress and The Fuzzman. Though the vocals sound more into kinda dark wave or something like that, The Teddy Boys are really promising and I cant wait for more stuff. One more cool band in the same vein and more 60s oriented are The Teardrops that contribute with two songs, making their first appearance ever on CD or vinyl. The organ sound is upfront in the 5* Hotels tune I Want You, which a perfect mixture between garage and pop. Their note on the inner sleeve that they hate the revivalisitic cover bands is still inexplicable The CD includes some fine rocknroll tunes too, like the ones from Alexandros Perros & The Lone Stars and T4Trouble. The Ducky Boys from Athens are more into rockabilly and punk rock stuff, though their Waiting For Yesterday tune reminds me a lot of early Last Drive and thats really flattering for a band to say indeed. Strange Brew are appearing with two nice pop gems with lots of organ and very good vocals. Quite similar to Strange Brews sounds is Spys Girl by a band I heard for the fisrt time in here, named Marry Me Mary!! In more hard lines and sounds with wild guitars and screams are the songs by The Crazed and The Psyckicks while Unknown Passage are more into psychedelia. The 15th band in here are The Hydes from Katerini that had a fab 45 out back in 1998 which was re-released by the Aussie Corduroy Records later. Corduroy also included The Hydes in two compilations so far, one for The Pretty Things and one for The Rolling Stones, which came out last year after ages of waiting. The CD contains a mini poster with the Ouzo-Super Man (!!!) that is featured on the cover and some liner notes plus photos by the bands too. This compilation album is the best way for someone who is interested into whats going down in Greeces garage scene to learn about it. Come on Cave-Dwellers, Greece isnt known only for Acropolis and souvlaki, this (my) country really rocks! On Stage Records: http://www.oocities.org/onstagerecords/eng.htm |

THE BABY WOODROSE Money For Soul, LP Bad Afro Records, no ref. no., 2003, Denmark Yeah, this is a great album to listen to over and over again. Lorenzo guitars/organ/vocals), Riky (bass/guitars/vocals) and Rocco (bass/guitars/vocals) managed to create a real gem thats soon to be classic. I had listen to Baby Woodrose before on a couple of 45s and I really enjoyed their crude and authentic garage sound reminding me more of the Lollipop Shoppe and other Fred Coles outfits, like Dead Moon. In this record, Baby Woodrose managed to create a unique sound and style that is so authentic and genuine that will certainly remain as a spotlight in the garage music history! All their compositions are truly inspired and discrete. Trying to describe their sound and not compare to any band, I would say that it is something between The Third Bardo and Monster Magnet (mainly because of Lorenzos tone of voice). You may think that Monster Magnet has nothing to do with garage punk but I am really against that point of view as I find Monster Magnet deeply affected by the 60s garage and psyche and anyway thats another subject for discussion. Baby Woodrose perform 12 great songs in this album, all composed by the bands mastermind and leader, Lorenzo Woodrose. The organ on this album has sweetened the bands sound and added some more melodic touch in their music. Listen to fab hits like Honeydripper, Disconnected, Pouring Water, Hippie Chick, Everythings Gonna Be Alright, Money For Soul, Never Coming Back, You Own It, You Better Run, Rollercoaster, Volcano and their greatest hit Carrie! Yeah, all twelve songs out of this album are great hits, no fillers in here, ONLY KILLERS!!! Baby Woodrose: http://www.babywoodrose.com Bad Afro Records: http://www.badafro.dk |

THE LAUNDERETTES Take Me To The Race, 12 EP Big Dipper Records, BDR034, 2003, Norway The Launderettes by this new platter proves once more that they have nothing to do with the several worthless boring all-girl bands that appeared in the 90s and made me suffer when buying their records and then crying for the cash I afforded. This band is not just a girly band that tries to sell records by its female appearance. The Launderettes are a great band with cool garage punk compositions, with quality sound and well-played songs. Take Me To The Race, which opens the record is fast organ-driven tune ala early Pandoras and Lust-O-Rama and a remarkable refrain to remember after just one spin of the record. In the same style but a bit slowed down despite its title, goes Go Faster which follows. On the other side of the record there is Stay Away, another organ & fuzz garage punker and in the end Too Late To Say Youre Sorry, the best moment of the record! I believe that Lucy Gone Wayward, the vocalist of The Launderettes, must have spent many hours listening to The Brood stuff as her voice has many common elements with Chris Hornes one. The other Launderettes are Candy Cadillac - guitar, Dandy Brandy organ, Vicky Vicious bass, Bambi Bazooka drums. Undoubtedly a must have for all Cavemen and Cavegurls!
