MAINLINERS Dead Mans Hall/Daughter Of Dimes, 7 single Crusher Records, CR 001, Sweden, 2004
Yet another
great garage band from the cold European North! In this 45, the Mainliners
manage to match garage punk and powerpop in the two sides of their brilliant
debut appearance and leave us impatiently waiting for their next record. Dead Mans Dance is one great song in the style of St. James
Infirmary with strong soulful vocals and a wall of sound, which undoubtedly
reminds me the Creeps. On the other side Daughter Of dimes is very popish
while perfectly mixes the 60s with 70s. You can also check the Mainliners
website and download some outstanding mp3s but dont forget to get their 45 as
I am sure that you will not regret it. |
THE HEKAWIS My Sunshine/Four Flights Up, 7 single Corduroy
Records, 2004, Australia Thats the
latest release with two new live recordings in the Corduroy studios by The
Australian Hekawis. 60s and 80s garage punk sound with lots of organ,
screams and beer down the basement. |
THE CHAINS Till You Come Back Home/The Boy Who Took My Place, 7
single Screaming
Apple Records, SCRAP071, 2004 I have to
admit that their debut album on Get Hip last year didnt impress me that
much. This new 45 though is special as it contains two great soul-beat tunes
that will even satisfy the 60s purists too. |
THE STAGGERS Wild Teens, 7 EP Staggers
Records, STAGGERS45-001, 2004 This is a great debut 45 by the Staggers from Austria! The 45 includes 3 garage punk songs in the finest BFTG tradition performed by fuzz, snotty screams, farfisa and way cool cavemanish attitude! One of the coolest 45s in 2004! |
THE RIPPERS -
Are Coming Behind You, 7 EP Shake Your
Ass Records, SYA007, 2004, Italy Yep, these guys from Italy are like the sons of The Tell Tale Hearts married to the daughters of the Morlocks ! Hohoho! They manage to combine the powerful rhythm section of the Hearts with the wildest and creepiest Morlocks style and attitude! I bet that if these punkers had been in the 80s, Crypt would have definitely signed them along with the Wylde Mammoths. So, here we have a 4-track EP with snarls, harps and craziness in a limited (!) edition of 300 copies only. |
THEE SHAMS Be Coming Home
& More, 7 single Shake It Records, SHAKE 731, 2004, USA Yet another Shams 45 that showcases an early Stones sound and feeling performed genuinely. The 45 apart from Be Coming Home on A-side includes Time You Wasted which is in fact the more that is titled on the sleeve of the record. This record is not just a fine addition to a record collection but a 45 that will spin on your turntable for long. |
FORTUNE AND MALTESE Girls Gotta Learn, 7 EP Get Hip Recordings, GH-231, 2004, USA I dont know if these are new recordings by Fortune and Maltese or old ones that came out in the light by Get Hip, but surely are as great as their previous were. This is the bands 9th 45 since 1993 and it sounds more into garage punk than ever (just listen to I Hate You Baby and youll understand what I mean ). Ok, get this one cavemen cause (cave)girls gotta learn! |
THE MONOCAINES Highest Prize,
7 EP Copase Disques, CDEP001, 2004, Germany Thats a brand new band from Germany performing good modbeat and pop music on a brand new too label, Copase Disques, that also released the debut album of the Moving Sounds. Well, this 45 includes 2 originals and two covers (Outsiders Time Wont Let Me and Jams Non-Stop Dancing). The covers are well performed but I prefer the two originals: Highest Prize is a happy pop tune with strong refrain while Its Not The Way is a song that in the beginning reminds me of Leaving Here and then turns into something like Heatwave. Thats really charming. |
THE STAGS The
Wilsons/36-24-37, 7 single Private Label, no ref. No, 2004, UK Yet another brand new band that comes from the UK but surprisingly they have nothing to do with mod or beat! The Stags are the British cousins of the Boss Martians, the Untamed Youth and of course the Beach Boys! The Wilsons is a vocal surf tune that really reminds a lot of the Beach Boys and the 36-24-37 is a fab shakin instro with upfront organ grooves. There is more to come from these cats! |
LYRES Tear you Up/Felice Noddydod,
7 single D.U.I. Records, D.U.I. 004, 2004, USA So here is PokemonoJeff (!!!) rockin on again for once more! He gathered his friends and recorded this single live with no overdubs and no digital devices as its mentioned on the back sleeve. As for the music, the a-side is a mid-tempo garage rock tune with the all time favourite theme in the words: a girl rip-off! On the other side Jeff Conolly is competing Joe Pesci in GoodFellas using the F word many many times ! Thats really funny. |
THE MISTERIOSOS West Of
Nowhere, Mini-CD demo Private Label, 2004, USA Thats the second demo by the fab Misteriosos from the US that I happily got in my hands and then in the CD player. Their music is like is written on the back sleeve psychedelic rocknroll or Id say just psychedelic punk. If you like the 80s NY garage scene (Fuzztones, Vipers, Backlight Chameleons, Tryfles etc.) you will certainly love the Misteriosos. The demo contains 6 songs and Tula or Jellyroll would kindly help you to get their music if you get in contact with them by the address below. |
RUMBLE SKUNK #1, magazine Rumble Skunk, issue #1, 2004, Greece Yet another really cool fanzine dedicated to the groovy garage / beat / surf & psyche sounds based in Nafpaktos, Greece! The fanzine contains articles about the Baroques, the Ugly Ducklings, Fun Things, Dead Moon, The Philisteins, The Baby Woodrose, The Meanie Geanies and other bands plus record reviews, news etc (whatever a zine must have!). The zine comes with a fab CD compilation that contains unreleased tracks by The Unheard Of, Dead Moon, Yesterdays Thoughts, The Meanie Geanies, The Voodoo Healers, The Hydes and The Philisteins plus cool tracks by Mandra Gora Lightshow Society, The Perverts and The Baby Woodrose. The sleeve is obviously drawn by the mighty Darren Merinuk! Way Cool! |
THE MIDWAYS / THE GLADS Split,
7 EP Music For Cats Records / Panty Raid Records, no ref. No, 2004, Canada Its been a while since I listened to any new garage band from Canada (where It Was Happening In The Eighties and Nineties!) and this split 45 came to shake me up a little! I havent yet listened to the Midways debut album but these two songs of the EP proves that they are the next big garage thing from Canada! One punk, Get Out Now, and one popbeat tune, Shake It Up are enough to persuade anyone! The Glads are a nice surprise to my ears too! They sound like the Woggles and they play two fab scorchers: My Babys Got It & Do The Go To Hell (Great title, great theme, great organ driven sound!!!). |
THE RIPPERS End Of The Hunt, 7 EP H-Records, HR-031, 2004, Spain They will not end! This is their 5th 45 since 2002, this time by the Spanish label that put out the Fumestones album in 2004. They deliver again 4 fab RnB snarlin stompers that will make you sweat! More, more, more!!! |
THE STAGS Husky!, 7 EP Rotosonic Records, ROTO-001, 2004, UK Wow! These cats are really great! This is their 2nd 45 (check out the review for their 1st and 3rd 45s too) and Husky! is one fab dancin beat instro full of organ grooves on A side while Bobby Papoose is one great tale about Bobby with beat rhythms and hammond chills! Choc Ice is closing the record, again with organ in front but with girly vocals this time! Bravissimo! |
THE STAGS One Track Mind /
Sour Grapes, 7 single Rotosonic Records, ROTO-002, 2004,
UK Hey people! These guys and girl are really really great!!! Also apart from their fascinating organ fueled beat madness for once more, I figured out that they have hip names too!!!: Topsy (the chick on vocals), Conway Castle (guitar), Spencer Chess (hammond), Kenny Roquette (drums) & Murdo Gloves (bass and less interesting name sorry Murdo !)!!! |
