THE OKMONIKS – Take A
Spin With The Okmoniks EP
In-Fi Records (In-Fi 001) 2001 THE OKMONIKS – Rustle Up
Some Action With The Okmoniks EP
In-Fi Records (In-Fi 002) 2002 This is a fresh new band from
Tucson, AZ, USA by two guys and two girls and they seem to enjoy it too much!
The attitude and the feeling that comes out of these two platters is nearly
the same you get from the Sexareenos but the Okmoniks are more into the
garage punk than the SFTRI’s pride. Sammy on guitar, Helene on organ and
vocals and Trent on bass seem to be the heart of the band while on the first
45 Sarah is on the drums and on the 2nd 45 Gwen takes her place.
Take A Spin With The Okmoniks and the 1st 45 and you’ll get “You
Took What I Ain’t Got” for start, a crazy, fast RnB stomper. “Little Bit More
Hate” that follows is a mid tempo garage punker with swirling upfront organ
sound and the 45 is ending with “Locked In The Trunk Of Your Ford Blues” that
reminds me more of the already mentioned Sexareenos. I think that the
Sympathy For The Records Industry should grab the Okmoniks crazy combo and
offer them a nice contract! The 2nd 45 starts with “Sorority Club
Song” which is a great RnB garage punker in the veins of The Lyrics’ “They
Can’t Hurt Me”. Next to that one is
“I’ll Let You In”, another splendid garage punk stomper with upfront organ
sound and Helene’s snotty vocals. Last comes “Next Worse Thing”, an uptempo
demented RnB tune to dance over and over. And there is something more that
the Okmoniks were enough wise to predict: Each one of these two records have
its three songs on both sides, because the only thing that is certain, is
that you will spin these two platters so many times till you damage them! So,
instead of paying for one time more to get these records when damaged, you
have the ability to get the same songs in mint condition by just turning the
45 to the other side! Great!!! Write to The Okmoniks, cause they love mail,

THE NO-GOODS – Lekkere Beat EPKuriosa Records (KUUR-001) 2002 This is the debut 45 by The
No-Goods that come from Meppel, Netherlands. The 45 contains four RnB beat tunes
that reminds me lot of the Thanes, The Embrooks and The Wylde Mammoths! This
45 was recorded by Mark (vocals, guitar) and Peter (bass, guitar, drums) who
are the basic members of the No-Goods and all four songs have already
appeared in the 2nd No-Goods CD release of their own Rock You
Records label. Lately a drummer joined the band and now they are able to play
live. All the songs (About Her, The Days That Never Come, Dora, Please) have
a moody feeling that is pleasant to my ears and they point out the obvious
talent of Mark and Peter. Get in contact with the No-Goods (check out the
links pages) or Kuriosa label at: Thorbeckelaan 65, 7942 CM Meppel, The
Netherlands and get that 45 while it lasts or the two of the fab No-Goods
CDs! 9 out of 10 |
THE OVERTONES – Surf Spyder/Full Moon Over Balboa Beach On Stage Records (002) 2003 Actually The Overtones are The Frantic V from
Thessaloniki, Greece in disguise. They wore their summer pants, went over to the
beach which is too close to their hometown, got inspired from the full moon
on a summer night and they played some wild surf instros as a soundtrack to
an ordinary summer night on a greek beach. So, while the temperature went
over to 40 C degrees they decided to get some cold air in a recording studio
and to chill out there by recording these two fab surf tunes. The summer is
coming, so get that piece of wax, record it on a tape or CDR and then hit it
to the nearest beach! For better results and even more greatest pleasure take
that 45 along with your turntable under your beach umbrella and pretend that
you are a DJ! You might get some girls attention by that (or end up with a
broken leg by any disturbed mister, hahaha!)!!! 8 out of 10 |
