Season One, episode nineteen

Brief Summary: Welcome to the Jungle, we got fun and games!

Summary: Lady Jaye and Pathfinder are fighting Cobras in an air battle over a jungle. Since a gorilla and a lion show up later, we’ll say this is an African jungle. Cobra Commander tells the other Cobras to defend him. He gets shot down but Night Creeper Leader is looking for him so it’s okay!

Pathfinder turns over control of his Sky Hawk to Lady Jaye and jumps out to go looking for CC so they can bring him back to the GI Joe Jail. (The GI Joe Jail?!)

Cobra Commander gets caught in a tree and tied up in the ropes of his chute in a very comical way. At least that’s what the incidental music tells us. Pathfinder also gets caught up in a tree but manages to cut himself down and fall onto the jungle floor. Owww…

A female gorilla finds Cobra Commander and a baby lion finds Pathfinder. Both animals are going to play key roles in our story. In CC’s case, the gorilla falls in love with him. This will be played for laughs throughout the rest of the episode because ape love is funny.

In Pathfinder’s case, the mother lion shows up to see her baby being harassed by a human. Pathfinder tosses the lion cub to her, which settles things as far as the momma’s concerned. DADDY on the other hand, is still more than a bit ticked at the meddling human and begins to follow Pathfinder.

Pathfinder manages to find Cobra Commander, still upside down in the tree, and cuts him loose after temporarily chasing off the female gorilla. Cobra Commander says that the gorilla was going to eat him! But Pathfinder (correctly) says that gorillas don’t eat humans (well, he says snakes but he means humans, it was a slam on CC’s snakey attire). Instead, he says that the female gorilla seems more interested in Romance than Dinner.

Pathfinder then takes Cobra Commander prisoner and tries to radio his location to Jaye. Unfortnately, he broke his radio when his fat-ass landed on it, so he can’t contact the Joes and they can’t contact him. So, instead, he handcuffs himself to Cobra Commander and they start making their way through the jungle.

Night Creeper Leader picks up on Cobra Commander’s homing signal while Jaye talks to Duke and the reinforcements that have arrived. Duke is in the air with Jaye, while Big Ben and his jungle fighters are on the ground.

Meanwhile, Pathfinder and Cobra Commander are trying to keep ahead of the lady gorilla. The gorilla is trying to catch up with them and the lion is also tracking Pathfinder and CC.

Again, we get a shot of Pathfinder and Cobra Commander running away from a lion. Which wouldn’t be so bad, except that cats attack based on movement. By running, you signal to them that you are now prey. This is something that an experienced jungle hand like Pathfinder should know.

Pathfinder and CC jump into a nearby river, only to learn too late that CC can’t swim. Not to mention, his power armor should be dragging them both to the bottom of the river. They manage to make it across however and while they’re sitting against a tree a snake wraps itself around Cobra Commander’s head in an attempt to eat him and define irony for the kids at home. We also learn at this point that Pathfinder is allergic to snakes. WHAT exactly there is to be allergic to on a snake is never revealed.

Pathfinder tosses the snake into the river and CC kindasorta thanks Pathfinder for saving his life. Before the two can fully bond and start singing Kumbaya, Night Creeper Leader and crew show up to try and rescue CC. They fire an arrow across the river, but are taken out by the female gorilla. Cobra Commander grabs the arrow to use as a weapon and tells Pathfinder that he’s going to take him prisoner. Pathfinder manages to overpower Cobra Commander and get the arrow away from him.

Big Ben still hasn’t found Pathfinder. Undertow, a Cobra Frogman, also shows up to look for Cobra Commander. Night Creeper Leader tells Undertow that he has the only tracking device so he’s really the only one who can find CC. Besides, he wants the credit for saving CC so he can get a Christmas bonus for the Night Creepers.

Cobra Commander tries to stall for time, but the gorilla is still on their trail. Pathfinder teases CC about the gorilla reminding him of someone. CC reacts in a way that says “yes, yes she does” even while he’s saying: “That gorilla is not my girlfriend!”

Eventually, Cobra Commander does admit that the gorilla reminds him of a woman named Bernice, though she didn’t have quite as much body hair as the gorilla.

The lion is also still on CC and Pathfinder’s trail. He manages to catch up with them and chases the pair up a tree. (Sing it with me! “CC and Pathfinder sittin’ in a tree!”)

There’s a Cobra base nearby, near enough for Pathfinder and CC to swing on a vine to reach it. Once inside, the Night Creepers show up again and separate CC and Pathfinder. Which works out great for the gorilla since she’s now able to grab her enamoratta and swing off with him. Pathfinder also gets a bit lucky when the lion chases him into a building that has radio equipment in it. He manages to get one working and radios the Joes to come save his butt!

Big Ben begins making his way toward the Cobra base but gets sidetracked when a group of Cobra Pirahnna attack him and his Joes. Jaye, meanwhile, flies to the Cobra base only to be attacked by Night Creeprs and shot down. She ejects, but her Skyhawk crashes and the burning wreckage falls on the lion. Pathfinder runs over to save the lion, who runs off then returns to give Pathfinder big wet kitty kisses of forgiveness.

The gorilla is macking on a distressed Cobra Commander who is eventually rescued by Night Creeper Leader. The gorilla is very sad and the Joes mock her pain.

“Juliet had her Romeo,” Pathfinder says, rubbing salt in the gorilla’s romantic wounds, “This here gorilla, I guess she’s just stuck on snakes.” Exhunt laughing

Commentary: It’s pretty bad when the best you can think to say about an episode is “It wasn’t as bad as it could have been….” This episode would probably have been better if the Cobra in question wasn’t CC himself. Then again, the Commander has a certain priggishness about him that cries out for this sort of ego-deflating embarrassment.

Poor Gorilla...here's hoping she found a nice guy to settle down with...
