SOPHOCLES' ALLEY-HOUSE
You make your way to the East End, & decide to take a look around for a while.

The East End is not what you expected. It’s dirty, dingy, dusty, & disgusting. Street thugs mug many unsuspecting rodents, large cats stalk the alleys, & highway bums are crawling all over the roads, begging for food or coins. All kinds of insects are swarming around, & rotten smells make your nose sting.

However, you spot a bright, plush-looking spot in Westbrook Avenue. A place that appears to be a safe haven from all the rest of these mean streets.

You take a closer look at the alley. A sort of makeshift house has been set up.

Just then, you run into someone. You look up, & scream for a moment, just as the mouse begins to scream, too.

You look at the mouse. He has tan fur, curly black hair, a pink nose, long whiskers, & sweet brown eyes. He wears old black shoes, a fancy rainbow coat with a sparkly shoulder-patch, fancy khaki trousers, a ruffled white shirt, & a tattered top hat.

You introduce yourself to the mouse. The mouse smiles at you, hiding his face nervously. “I’m Sophocles Braveheart.”

You look at Sophocles’ alley-house. It’s very filthy, but very creative. There’s a rusty chain with damp clothes drying on it, a small box of books, a small food tray with silverware & plates on it, a n empty soup can with a pillow & blanket inside it, a dirty bottle with pretty flowers in it, a trunk of toys, a large stage with bright lights & curtains, a little theater, small stool-seats, & various boxes & bags of props & costumes.

Your face begins to show a look of awe.

Sophocles says, “You like my house? I’ve done a lot of work on it.”

You can only manage to mouth in marvel, “How did you do it?”

Sophocles smiles modestly. “When my father & I lost our house, I made a new home for us in this alley. Now that Father’s in jail, I have to use this place to work on plays & songs. Creations that will earn rodents’ sympathy, & get them to help me free Father from jail!”

You are curious about Sophocles’ story. The young artist is more than eager to tell you his tale about his birth, his life with his father, his homelessness, his Father’s arrest, & his mission to free his father from jail & bring glory back to the Braveheart name.

You are moved to tears as Sophocles finishes his life story.

Just then, a little cockroach, Platterson, comes up to Sophocles. He whispers into the mouse’s ear, “The paintings, Sophocles! Show her the paintings!”

You catch wind of the conversation. You ask in astonishment, “You paint?”

Sophocles smiles again, & nods at you. “Yes, I do,” he says. “I’ll show you some of my pictures.”
