 John Hepenstall

 Born: about 1822-?

 Wife: Deborah I. Page

 Child: Ruth AngelineHepenstall 1844-1935

 Emily ? & Charles Heppenstall

Charles Henry Heppenstall born in Middlesex London, in 1872

 ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The original Hepenstall family (with one P) originated from Co. WicklowIreland. The family changed its name from Hempenstall after the infamous evil hangman of Co. Wicklow who relished his job ( who was called Hempenstall.) So a fraction of the family from Redcross Co. Wicklow dropped the M from the name and tried to continue on with anonymity.

My Fathers Mother was Victoria Hepenstall from Redcross and she married my grandfather William Daly. She was a Church of Ireland protestant and she was disowned by the family for marrying a Catholic. The rest of her siblings remained Protestant but all have since died and there are now no Hepenstalls left in Dublin but I beleive there is one family left in Co. Cork. All the Hepenstalls who were Protestant found themselves in a minority community and with intermarrying they produced very few descendants and my grandmothers sisters never married. They all lived into there 90's without the need for eyeglasses except for my grandmother who died at 98 in C.1975 who was blind when she died. She was reunited with her siblings in later life after her parents had passed away and they all spent there last years in Dublin. My Father?s only cousins who were from his Mother?s Brother?s marriage were Hepenstalls, and I met them often before they died in their 80's with alas, no children.

They were the last known Hepenstalls born in Ireland.

 ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Sam and Charles Heppenstallwere the first of the family to come to America and settle around Pittsburgh. They lived around Rotherham, YorkshireEngland in 1832 when Charles was Christened. I am not sure when they came to America. Charles was married in about 1843 and was here then. I have not encountered any Reverend's in the family so far. How was he related to Sam Heppenstall who started the Heppenstall Steel company? The Sam Heppenstall who started the Company was born 1842and died 1931. His son Samuel Brittlef Heppenstall then ran the company. He was born 1879 and died 1966.

My Great Grandfather John Heppenstall born in Cawthorne nr. Barnsley in Yorkshire 1838. I have some inform from 1838-1847. He left Cawthorne to work in Hemsworth Nr. Pontefract to work as a gardener and then as a miner, his wife's name was Martha (nee Pullen) from Worsborough.

 ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

John Heppenstall was my gt grandfather also.

Most of what I know is based on oral comments of relations (I am new to geneology) but marriage cert. in South Yorkshire Archives Sheffield UK gives

Marriage @ St Georges Church Sheffield 19 sept 1864

John batchelor 27 gardener father John dealer

Martha spinster 23 father William joiner

Martha made her mark - presumably illiterate

My mother recalls that see could read with difficulty but could not write

Both living @ Charlotte Lane Sheffield

 DOB: John 10 May 1837

 Martha 29 May 1841

Oral statements include John worked for Earl of Wharncliffe @ Wortley Hall. Martha as maid to Earl's daughter. Speculate (will check in street directory) that Earl had town house where both were working - cohabitation v unlikely.

Later worked at Hemsworth Hall (now a school)

(did not know about mine work).

 Had 8 sons + 2 daughters

 Herbert b. 3 July 1865

Ada b.13 January 1883 (my grandmother)

Said that Martha's parents kept Red Lion @ Worsborough Bridge (recently renamed Button Makers Arms)

 John died @ Hemsworth19 May 1883

Martha subsequently married a Mr Wood -miller of Hemsworth they lived at Roslyn Villa now a hairdresser (or was when I last passed some years ago) which is on the Barnsley Road opposite a council estate which post dates their time there.

I am Caleb Heptonstall's great-great-great-great-great-great-grandaughter. His son Abraham had my great- great- great-great- grandmother Elizabeth born April 23, 1792 and died June 29, 1860. She is buried in the county where I live and grew up. I have not tried to find the family farm yet or the graves. Email me at higgin@kih.net.

My great-grandfather James Heptonstall came to the United States as a young man from England, in late 1850's. His father had arrived earlier, then sent for his family. A relative was born in Mill Bridge, Liversedge, Yorkshire, but we have no specific connection (a sister, half-sister, or cousin). Both families have a picture of the lady, Christiana Heptonstall Izatt.

I am looking for information on the ancestry and family of Caleb and Lize/Tege Greer Heptinstall. Our ancestor is their son, William, who married Permelia Phelps. ANY information on this family would be greatly appreciated and I would be glad to exchange what I have, which is mostly concerned with the descendants of William and Permelia through their daughter Manerva Heptinstall who married John Headen.

-----------------------

saw your message on the board. I have Heptonstalls in my family history also. The farthest I can go back is to John H. Heptonstall (1828 to 1909.) He married Margaret Jane Nagley (1842 to 1929)

Do you think this fits into your family history? I would love to find out more as I am stuck on this.

A cousin of mine. Fromerly Carol Martin and her husband did an extensive mapping of the Heptinstall family in both Franklin and Bedford VA counties. My father was of course Fred Bernard Heptinstall Sr., his father was A. L. Heptinstall and directly related to Caleb Heptinstall. The work Carol and her husband completed dates back to circa 1700 in Franklin county. Please advise if you already have this information.

This is the information I have on Charlotte and Stephen:

Charlotte Heptinstall b. abt. 1810, Franklin Co, VA.

m. Feb 4, 1834 in Bedford Co, Va to Stephen Dudley son of Levi and Mary Kemp Dudley. Charlotte was the daughter of Caleb Heptinstall and Lize Tege Greer of Franklin Co, VA.

I have a copy of the 1850 census of Callaway County, MO and it lists: Stephen Dudley 38, b VA; Charlotte 35, b VA;

children: Mary A.J. age 16; Amanda age 12; Emily age 9; Sarah J. age 7; Silas G. age 5; Rebecca F. age 1; and a John W. Meadows age 15. All the children were born in MO. The interesting thing to note is that Charlotte and Stephen must have gone to MO with some of her sisters and their husbands. We find Sophia and John Ferguson, Jenetta W. Heptinstall and John Gilliam Tate and Rebecca Heptinstall and Bluford Hutts all moved to Callaway Co, MO, along with a bunch of Fergusons, Dudleys, Kemps and Tates.

Do you know of any family connection between Heptinstall and Heppenstall. As far as I am aware we originate from South Yorkshire. My grandfather was Jack Heppenstall and my father is Terry Heppenstall?

--------------------------------

most heptinstalls originate from west south yorkshire the name varies in its spelling quite a bit. it probably originated from the village of heptonstall near hebdon bridge.the 1881 census of uk. is a good place to start to find a connection.

heaps of heps.areto be found around pontefract in the west riding of yorks.

the name is derived from old danish and roughly means roses in the valley of horses

hep. is old danish for rose hip. ton is place

or valley and stall is a horses house or something like that.my own family came from castleford pontefract

-----------------------------------------

e gone as far back as 1800 with W.B Heptinstall, born in 1800, maybe in North Carolina. One of his son was Calvin Heptinstall from Georgia/Ala.

Co. Wicklow, Ireland, has a rich variety of names of English origin, but there is no overall pattern to their migration. For example, the Hanbidges came from Gloucestershire while the Valentines appear to have migrated from Ipswich and both settled in the area of the Glen of Imaal. It would be expected that many of these names would have come from the same areas of England, especially in the case of the Coolattin estate which eventually passed to Lord Fitzwilliam. It was owned in the 17th century (1600s) by the Wentworths who hailed from the place of the same name in Yorkshire. Surprisingly, the names of the tenants of this estate in the 1730s (then owned by Lord Malton) do not show any significant Yorkshire presence.

The principal names of English origin in Co. Wicklow in 1851 are Smith (101 households), Clarke (46) - though neither is necessarily English - Wilson (44), Hall (34), Dixon (24), Jackkson (23) and Mason (23). All of these could be found in just about any part of Ireland.

There are a number of surnames which are distinctly associated with the Wicklow area, however. Hanbidge, Hempenstall/Hepenstall, Stringer and Tutty. The Quaker families of Penrose and Nuzum/Newsom, though never populous, were present in the SE of the county from the 17th century.

Update | 12/12/04…

My name is Nicole Hepinstall b 12/19/1981, daughter of Lori Hepinstall and David Ross from Long Island, NY. My gggrandfather, Dwight Hepinstall was originally from Michigan but resided on Long Island, NY for what I believe was mostly during the 1940's through the early 1960's. He married Helen Lucas and had 3 sons- oldest was my ggrandfather, Lawrence Ellis Hepinstall b 8/9/1944. 2nd oldest was Dwight Michael Hepinstall, and the youngest David Hepinstall. Unfortunately, the family tree as I know it ends there. Dwight SR moved back to Michigan alone and had no further contact with his Long Island family. I am seeking any information about Dwight SR and the family I have yet to know in Michigan. The only additional information I have it that Dwight Sr passed away, maybe from cancer?, during the late 80's or early 90's. If anyone can shed some light on this family mystery of mine, i would greatly appreciate it! ~ Nicole Hepinstall
