The Hype hails from Edmonton, Alberta. Two of its members are still in High School while the other two are at various stages in their post-secondary studies. We have been together since late 2001 when we played our first show at the Refinery Youth Group Talent Night. Since then we have played only a handful of gigs and are still playing gigs. Jeff writes most of the words to the songs and, up until now, Mike has been the primary composer of music. Both Jon and Mark are working on stuff as well. Jeff says that his primary influences would have to be Radiohead, with Thom Yorke's angst-ful lyrics, and the poetry of T.S. Eliot. "Do I comb my hair from behind, do I dare to eat a peach? / I shall wear white-flanneled trousers and walk along the beach. / I have heard the mermaids singing each to each / I do not think they will sing to me." Just beautiful! Mike is heavily influenced by Led Zepplin, U2, Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young, as well as many of the artists who recorded during the Woodstock era. The Beatles are also a huge influence. His guitar work continues to develop as he combines the skill he used in other bands (Megahertz, Cornerstone, Cornered, Heartsmash) with new and innovative ideas on sound and progression. And he has a skull on his guitar. Sooo cool! Jon has been influenced by U2, Led Zepplin (with the awesome bass work of John Paul Jones), Simon & Garfunkel, and the Beatles. He specializes in high-sounding bass harmonies, his fingers climbing up and down the bass neck, earning him the well-deserved nickname: "Spider". Mark, the drummer for the Hype, has been influenced by the phenomenal drumming of John Bonham, as well as U2, the Beatles, and others. Often during practice, Mark will throw in a double-kick, to the surprise and pleasure of all who hear. He is usually referred to as the handsome member of the band. The jury is still out on that one... Probably the most important thing, however, to each of us, is our faith in Jesus Christ. He's the reason for living. Any words that are written or music that is played is ultimately for His glory. "The total end of man is to glorify God and enjoy Him forever". Our purpose as individuals, and as a church is to get to know God better and encourage others to do the same. |
