In 1964,
Bill Travers and Virginia
McKenna starred in the film ‘Born Free’, which told the true story of
George and Joy Adamson as they returned Elsa the lioness to the wild. The
Adamson's devoted their lives to the protection of lions and other species
and their amazing story was an inspiration, changing the world’s attitude
to wildlife for ever.
The Born
Free Foundation was officially established in 1991
by Bill, Virginia and their son Will. Today Born Free incorporates eight
major campaigns to help wildlife in need -
Zoo Check Campaign,
Elefriends Campaign,
Wolf Campaign,
Dolphin Campaign,
Primate Campaign,
Big Cat Campaign,
UK Wildlife Campaign,
The Bear Campaign.
Within Born Free is

Tusk Trust was
established in 1990 in response to the urgent demand for greater
conservation in Africa, where the ever growing human population and demand
for more land, is bringing man into increasing conflict with wildlife and
its habitat.
.Tusk
Trust aims to help the conservation of all wildlife. Species such as
the African Wild Dog, Cheetah, Chimpanzee, Elephant, Mountain Gorilla,
and Rhinoceros are all seriously threatened, as is much of their
habitat. The Trust aims to protect such areas of natural habitat for
the benefit of both the wildlife and communities alike.
They also
actively promote positive educational and community wildlife
programmes to increase the understanding of Africa's natural resources
and its value to the local population. |
Their current project
for Elephants is at the
Niassa Reserve . Mozambique

African Elephant Conservation Trust
'The goal of the African Elephant Conservation Trust is the successful
conservation of Africa's elephants within the context of human needs and
pressures. Recognizing the crucial role of the long-term study of
elephants in Africa to the overall conservation process, the Trust will
create, maintain and manage an endowment fund to support the Amboseli
Elephant Research Project and similar projects undertaken as part of the
African Elephant Conservation Trust program.'

This charity was founded in 1993
by
Dr. Iain Douglas-Hamilton,
Chairman of the Board of Trustees, who made a pioneering study of elephant
behaviour in the late '60s in Lake Manyara National Park, Tanzania, and
has worked on elephant status Africa-wide since.
Save the Elephants (STE) approaches
conservation from an elephant’s perspective. They believe elephants
deserve special respect from humanity because they are sensate beings with
a higher order consciousness, and they intend to safeguard the elephants
future in an increasingly insecure world.

The Elephant Sanctuary was, founded in
1995an is America's first natural habitat refuge developed specifically
for endangered Asian elephants. It operates on 800 acres surrounded by a
3,000-acre buffer zone in the town of Hohenwald, Tennessee — 65 miles
outside of Nashville.
The Sanctuary provides a haven for old, sick or needy elephants and
provides education about the crisis facing these social, sensitive,
passionately intense, playful, complex, exceedingly intelligent and
endangered creatures.

Asian Elephant Habitat Program
'The Sanctuary's
premise is that there is no better place for the Asian elephant then in
its native ranges and that these ranges must be protected and enhanced. We
intend to find individuals and organizations that are willing to share in
the Sanctuary's commitment to providing safe native range and expanding
elephant sanctuaries. Research to locate elephant preserves and
sanctuaries and to identify individuals and entities responsible for them
has already begun. Look for updates on this program on the website.'

'Living With Elephants is dedicated to
relieving conflict and competition between the African Elephant and human
populations in Botswana. We do this by identifying sources of conflict,
developing strategies for resolution and offering educational programs
which encourage a harmonious relationship between elephants and people. We
believe that extensive participation and commitment by the communities is
a requirement for success.'

'Friends of the Elephant is a
Dutch organisation dedicated to the protection of elephants. For both the
African and Asian Elephant. Because elephants are very special animals who
are still endangered. By Ivory poachers, by farmers who find them
troublesome and by the tourist industry that kidnap baby-elephants and if
necessary shoot down the mother.
With financial support to definite
projects and giving information we support the elephant. With that support
elephants can keep on living in their natural environment. Friends of the
Elephant is a member of the Species Survival Network, a worldwide
collaboration of nature conservation and preservation organisations from
sixty countries that are dedicated to the preservation of endangered
animal- and plant species. '
