Ebony Explained for the lay person
"there is a variety of dominate and other genes that blend to create a deep, rich, black, shiny fur"

Dominate Charcoal (ebony) genes - often called a weakly dominate mutation.  Componding/layering of several strains of charcoal/ebony may produce different affects.
TASCO ~ Dom gene - black to black/brown ... in hetero state may look like a dark standard but there is blacker shadowing over the hock and blue color in the belly.   Homzygous will be very dark over most of the body showing a blue gray brown belly and sometimes the belly will be extremely dark.   If breeding a Tasco to std gray there could be several generations before the Tasco genes are buried.

FRENCH BLUE ~ Much like the Tasco, but more of standard gray fur but blue belly fur in the hetero form.  Homozygous is much darker but may be smaller and have a twist in the tail.

BUSSE ~ Also a dark blue black in the top part of his body, in the homozygous from... but more bluish gray to blue/brown body and  show a discolored belly in the hetero.

Midnight Black ~ (non ebony) Solid, shiney jet black with a white belly.

Recessive Charcoal/ebony genes
Charcoal showed up in several areas at once.  There could be 4 or more of these recessive "ebony" genes.

Lester Black, Midwest City Black, Black Onyx
Jet black with black/gray to black tummy and a somewhat lighter under fur, longer fur is dense in homo forms.  Hetero form shows a dark veiling over back.
Treadwell is considered vary close to this but is generally smaller.

Dusk Charcoal
This variation has a veiling of charcoal/black over slate to light gray under fur and a solid wrap belly.  Also known as Somavia black, Broucke or Reddick black)

Curly Brown (Sakrison Brown) very rare -
Very slow breeding and a small strain, characterized by deep brown curled fur and tail.    Was thought to be extinct, but has been seen in limited areas about 1997-98.

Shadow charcoal brown (Broucke brown)
Under fur is slate gray to light gray with brown.charcoal veiling.  Another wrap ranging from chocolate phase to a very dark and rich, almost black.
