Chin Proofing a play area
How can we chin proof a room ?
This is not easily to totally chinchilla proof a room, but many people want to let their pet chins run around and exercise in their homes. It is very important to do this in an area that is chin proofed.
Often, people will close off a hall way or use a bathroom.  The bath room is a good area since it is often a tile or vinyl floor, there is no cords (telephone, computer, electrical) laying about, and there is less space to monitor what the chin is doing.  Just besure to close the toilet and remove anything that can be chewed.

First, no hidden areas, or places to hide. This would include places were an animal can squeeze between furniture and a wall, beds or a couch to hide under.  ANYPLACE a large rodent can escape to and cause destruction.

No exposed cords, wires or electical cables.  This includes wire for computers, phones, TVs (including cable), video game decks, any thing that is used with electricity for recharging (like cell phones). Think of ANY small cords or such that could be inticing to a chin, whether electricity is presentat the moment or not.

Areas that are easily cleaned, swept or vacuumed.  As your chin runs about, he will poop as well as some stray hair maybe left. SO you want to make sure the area is easily cleaned once he goes back to his cage.  Chins rarely urinate outside their cage, but this still has to be a consideration.

NO precious wood items.  Chins just love to chew, and it seems that permanent woodwork and and irreplaceable antiques are often prefered over the items we have given them.  Bitter apple sprays and other detourants do not seem to phase the chinchilla.  You will need to remore or protect these items.

NO open water or fall hazards.  As in the bathroom scenario, you will not want any open water a chin could fall into and make sure there are no fall hazzards in the room either.
