Pet wise hamster tips Never wake a sleeping hamsters by trying to pick it up! Here, a bite is not the hammies fault. Find several shops that have hamsters, if possible. Visit each as often as possible before you condsider buying a pet. A good pet hamster will not throw itself onto it's back and scream when a hand is presented. Biting is not acceptable. "Talking" is not biting. Reach for the hamsters head, or the front of the body, with a cupped hand - blocking their movement and letting them see what is there. NEVER grab at their hind quarters, as this is how predators would nab them, and the first defense is to turn and bite, scream and scramble!! Select for young a hamster. 6-8 weeks is a good age to select a baby hamster. If they have been raised in the proper conditions, and kept well through the stressful part of weaning and handling by humans, they would be at optimum health, both physical and mentally balanced. Youngster that have been stressed by poor conditions and bad diet may be more prone to fatal wet tail. Hamster at the ideal age may still be a bit more reactive and will benifit from being left alone for upto 3 weeks, other then daily feeding and brief positive interaction. Let the ham come to you at first. Do not confuse an active, nervous younster with a hammie that is ill mannered. Giving attention a few minutes each day is better then giving long sessions of handling a few times a week, A hamster that is handled regularly will tame done and remain calmer as time goes on....While most nasty (Syrian) hamsters can be tamed well enough to be handled, the calmer hamsters are much nicer to have around and I feel the well mannered animals live longer. Hamsters have very poor eye sight, and that is for the regular black eye color.... brown, ruby, red and pink have proceedingly worse vision. They work more on smell and movement rather then actually seeing details. Always wash your hands well before handling your hamster. This way he will no be confused by scent of food or other odors on you. Keep handling daily, even if it is just for a short period,,, this will keep you hammie tame, and as time goes on it will become easier (for both of you) and the pet will look forward to you "coming out to play". Food motivation is great with hamsters. The large striped sunflower seeds are like candy to your hams. The tame, well bred hamster will not bite the hand that feeds it! But, be aware that your fingers coming down on a small furry body can look like a talon or claw. Getting all your info on hamster care from the person at the pet shops is not always the best source. A group on the net and reliable published information should also be examined when every possible. Be very careful feeding treats. Start out only one a day, feeding very small portion, and clear away the left overs after a few hours. ... and observe for 3 or so days before giving anything else, so to make sure not to disturb their digestion. You do not want to feed anything in quanity as this could cause WT. As you introduce more variety and your hamster is doing well on what you have fed for treats, then you can become more frequent with select treats. |
