Hamster Species Study |
In order to breed, raise and promote the species of hamsters you are interested in, you will need to research all the facts and information you can find. This will include internet and chat/message boards, but do not limit yourself to just that. There are plenty of books, periodicals and resources available to get you a broad knowledge of each species. There are basically 5 species found in the US pet trade. More on that in another area. The things you will need to study include: * Learn all you can about the species: care guidelines, specific needs, life span, breeding habits, life cycle, how they live in the wild, mating habits, raising young, species specific ailments / maladies. * Familiarize yourself with the Show Standards, "standard of perfection", determining colors, patterns and coats typef variations... Pitfalls of breeding of different varieties, and what combinations are allowable, or not. Even if you don't attend shows, knowing the standards will help as you work with your animals. Most shows are held on either US coast. Organizations dedicated to hamsters exist in California, UK and other areas of Europe. * Allow time to contemplate the information and research tough topics again. Do not rush into doing the breeding. Learn the ropes and ask lots of quesions first, then proceed with a clear mind and a set goal, along with your code of ethics. * Listen to other breeders, shop owners and retail clerks with an exceptionally open mind. Ask a lot of questions, even if you think you know the answer. Sometimes this will teach you more then you could ever imagine, even if it could be learning from a bad example. * Make sure you have the services (or attention) of an experienced exotic veterinarian, one that has worked with hamsters. Just in case you need them later, you want to know they are within your calling for little or big events. Advice is always better from a animal health professional.
