Syrian or GOLDEN Hamsters are one of the most popular of small pets. Black Syrian (sometimes referred to as the European Black Bear Hamster) is just another color variation in the wide range of Syrian Hamsters.  Black is a recessive gene, making it hard to produce true black bears without careful regards to family lines and proper breeding practice like culling.  The compounding of black gene on other colors can make for some very interesting yet subtle changes in other colors. One variation I enjoy are the Gray's.  These include dark and light gray, frost and pearl. If you wish to see more of these colors search the link to the Complete Hamster Site. The black Syrian hamster is in great demand and many area's of the USA have already seen this happen.   BEWARE - I have seen some retailers showing sable hamsters as black, not knowing - or care to know, the difference in the two. SO now you can be one up on those that knows the difference! Look closely at YOGI in the picture. He has black fur, right up to his black eyes, with no brown, blonde or sable eye ring color.   While I specialize in long haired tri-colors hamsters, but also enjoy seeing many colors and coat types as I can find, in both long and normal coats.  Some types which interest many breeders include satin coat, rex coat & roan coloration, as well as compound colors.  ***** A good pet hamster will not want to scream loudly or roll on its back when you try to pick it up. Be aware of these things when look for any small pet. Proper breeding will produce not only happy, healthy and well mannered hamsters, but also a furry little buddy with a lovely color and coat.  Most Syrian hamsters can be tamed down with time.  Often age mellows them and they become better with humans.  Only the best and most gentle should be bred, if that is your intent.  Only animals that display very good personality early on should be considered for future breeding.   MORE on GOALS

Another color that is very popular, but rarely seen in pet shops is Tri color black and TortoiseShell.  These are only female and look like a calico cat.
