Things to know about your pet chinchilla
Teeth and mouth
Chins must chew.  And the must chew all their lives.
While we see chins use their front paws much like humans use their hands, the strength is in their mouth and teeth.  Make sure the environment in which you keep your pet is safe.
Wood is the best item for chins (and other rodents) to chew.  There is
a list of safe woods (or those considered safe) and those woods that are NOT safe to let your chin chew on.  Pumice stone is also a good item for your pet to chew on and keep those teeth worn down. Some keepers find Nyla bones work for them too. I suggest that you avoid flavored items, since you are never sure that the animal is chew in a natural manor or working on the item just for the flavor.
Along these same lines, be aware a chin will chew almost anything they can get their teeth on, inside or outside the cage.  This is why we must keep this in mind for all items in the cage, including dishes, hiding huts, water bottles, bottle gaurds and holders, toys and other furnishings and the cage itself.
Ensure that the cage wire is without an jagged edges or sharp areas that could injure their mouth.
