| Poppet or doll magic is a fun and effective way to work magic. This kind of magic is a form of Sympathetic magic. Example of sympathetic magic would be people jumping in fields to show the crops how high to grow, or hunters doing a mock hunt, like a play, to make the hunt go well. Sympathetic magic is the idea that what you do to a representation of a person, object or situation, will have an effect in the outcome of that person, object or situation. With poppets, you fashion a human figure to symbolize a specific person. With this you would work magic to make the person healthy, or happy or whatever it is you want. A key ingredient to this kind of magic is obtaining something from the person that the doll symbolizes, such as hair, nail clippings, a pictures, hand writing sample, etc, so that the doll can directly be associated with the person. Of course, poppets are not used for curses or love spells. They would be used for healings, or to bring specific things to yourself or to others. The Specifics: You need either a cloth doll you sew yourself, or one made from some other kind of material, like clay or wax. You would make it look just like the person - if they are tall, make it tall, if they are skinny, make it skinny, if they have brown hair and blue eyes, make it have brown hair and blue eyes. If your using cloth, you need to stuff it with something. You could just use regular stuffing found at a craft store, and/or herbs that correspond to the magic your working. You also need an object from the person, like a picture, nail clipping or hair to place inside the poppet. When you have the poppet fashioned to look just like the person the magic is being worked on, you would pay special attention not to break, rip, scratch or hurt it in any way. The popular belief is that what you do to the doll will also happen to the person (lets not think this is a voodoo doll. If you pick it with a pin, the person will probably feel nothing. Magic is suppose to be worked on this poppet, not physical actions) You will want to place it on the altar and say something that makes the doll a representation of the person. Maybe do a chant infusing it with the persons energy, or just telling the Gods that the magic worked on this doll will effect the person (make sure to state the full name, just in case) Then you could infuse it with the type of energy the magic is being worked for (healing, happiness, creativity, etc) Visualization should play a part in poppet magic, because you will have to visualize the doll being the representation of the person, and you will have to visualize the magic effecting the doll which in turns effects the person. You can keep the doll at your altar, or stored untill the magic has worked. Some say you should never destroy the doll, because it would effect the person. You should store it in a place where it wont be hurt, or give it back to the person the magic was worked on. |
