SUMBA ISLAND
Consist of:
The
name of Sumba or Humba is derived from a lady's name
Rambu Humba, the wife of Umbu Mandoku, a great leader and
founding father of Kabizu (Sumba Clans).
Is the capital of
West Sumba regency, with the traditional village Tarung
in the middle of Waikabubak, and the other villages are
Tambelar, Desaelu, and Waitaba. These villages are still
rich of megalithic altars and traditional ceremonies
carried out every year. It seems that traveling to
Waikabubak like enjoying a living museum along the trip.
These two villages
are situated in Walakaka district, which are attractive
for their traditional settlement, megalithics, and the
major event of Pasola usually takes place.
Prior to the Pasola
event, catching Nyale (sea worms) is done. It is in
February at Kodi and Lamboya village, in March at
Wanukaka village. Its exact time is 6 days before the
full moon.
22 Kms from
Waikabubak, this village offers you three-stage waterfall
and its beautiful panorama. It is potential for electric
power plant.
A traditional village
well known for a ceremony named Purungu Taka Donga Ratu,
held in every November. This village is also
characterized by its carved stone tombs of the former
kings. It has been decided to be a place of Cultural
Preserving.
The capital of East
Sumba regency. There is Prailiu, a village 2 Kms from
Waingapu, known as the center of weaving process and
dancing horses. There is also the local market selling
the splendid weavings.
A village 105 Kms
from Waingapu, well known for its typical weavings. It
always entertains the visitors with skillful
demonstration of weaving process, natural colouring and
dyeing. Ther you can share a feeling of Sumbanese weaving
art.
An island in the
south of East Sumba regency with the magnificent

traditional village 69 Kms from Waingapu. It is a very
attractive village for its megalithics and weavings.
