The Castle of Chamerolles was built
in the beginning of the 16th century by Lancelot 1 du Lac, who was Chamberlain to Louis
X11 then Baliff of Orléans under François 1. It is a traditional medieval fortress
design. The castle remained in the du Lac family till the end of the 17th century. After
changing owners several times,Paris gave the castle to the Loiret Department in 1987.
The castle was in very bad condition and extensive restoration from 1988 to 1992 resulted
in the castle we see now.
The castle now houses the Museum of Perfume. Through "La Promenande des
parfums", the history of beauty and hygiene from the 16th century to today is
discovered.
One can also walk through the Renaissance gardens created at the end of the 16th century.
There is a maze, a rare plants square and other smaller gardens to see.
"La Promenade des Parfums" is very interesting to see. There is a "dry
bath" and many objects related to perfumes and the fabrication of perfumes.
LOCATION: Chamerolles is located 30kms from Orléans direction Chilleurs-aux-Bois.
