HARLEY AND MALLET'S

FIREHOUSE ROMANCE

Guiding Light's super couple of Harley (Beth Ehlers) and Mallet (Mark Derwin) lit up the screen for CBS during 1991 to 1993. They were without a doubt one of Springfield's most romantic couples. Their romance attracted viewers young and old.

Harley was the feisty, daredevil rookie for Springfield PD while he was the consummate professional for the force. Their story line involved danger, suspense, intrigue and romance, all the ingredients of great soap opera. When last we saw them they were married in the Springfield Courthouse and left on their honeymoon in Florida.

"A.C. Mallett and Xyla, The Hearing Ear Dog"

In September of 1992 A.C. Mallett was seriously injured when a bomb exploded right in front of him and another GL character Mussette. As a result besides being paralyzed, he was left temporarily deaf and the show had him paired with Xyla, a hearing ear dog. There were some absolutely fabulous scenes in this informative and educational storyline and the photos above show A.C. Mallet (Mark Derwin) with Xyla.

In 1993 Mark had a great year. He was nominated for an Emmy as Outstanding Lead Actor for his role on Guiding Light along with a Soap Opera Digest Award for "Hottest Male Star". Below is a photo of Mark after winning his 1993 Soap Opera Digest Award.

Although Mark Derwin takes a casual approach to life,
his work on Guiding Light is far from under par.
