Accomplishments: "Classy" Freddie Blassie was born in St. Louis, Missouri in 1918. He excelled in all types of sports, like football, baseball, and boxing. He was actually so good at boxing, that he almost chose it as a career, but instead, chose professional wrestling. Freddie joined the Navy on the onset of World War II, and won titles in boxing and sport wrestling in the service. Freddie's first match was on his 26th birthday. It was against Don McIntyre in Birmingham, Alabama. Freddie won the match, and the NWA Southern Heavyweight Title. As Blassie became more popular, he bleached his hair blonde, and began to use his rule-breaking style that he used throughout his entire career. He filed his teeth to sharp points so he could cut people open by biting them. Doing so, he earned the nickname "The Vampire". Blassie was also stabbed 23 different times, had his car set on fire, had acid poured on him, and went blind in his right eye after a fan hit him in the eye with a hard boiled egg. This proves how hated Blassie was by the fans. Freddie retired in 1973, and began to manage. He was just as successful as a manager as he was a wrestler. He picked up the nickname, "The Hollywood Fashion Plate" while managing. He would wear loud, and fancy clothes as he accompanied his wrestlers down to the ring. As a manager, Freddie Blassie led the Iron Sheik to the WWF World Heavyweight Title, by defeating Bob Backlund with the Camel Clutch. Freddie Blassie also was the first man to manage Hulk Hogan when Hogan first came to the WWF. Sadly, Freddie passed away on June 2, 2003, from heart and kidney failure. Three weeks before his death, he appeared on WWE Monday Night Raw, telling the Dudley Boyz to "get the tables!" Freddie Blassie was an incredible pro wrestler, and after retiring, made it as an incredible manager as well. Most people remember him for his managing, and his catch phrase "pencil neck geeks". He was one of the all time greats when it came to professional wrestling managers, and will always be one of the best. Written by: Matt Lytle |
