Vietnamese Hon Non Bo is closely similar to the Chinese Penjing. Rock mountains and water play prominent roles in this art. While "Bonsai" means "tree in a pot", "Hon non Bo" or "Penjing" is a complete miniature island mountain scene, and water in a container. The artists use rock, water, and trees to create a more complete natural landscape. In Vietnam, "Hon", a short form of "Hon Dao", means an island. "Non" means a mountain. "Bo" means a combination of water, mountain range, and trees. In China, "Pen" means pot or tray, and "jing" denotes a natural scenery. Therefore, "Hon Non Bo" or "Penjing" represents a complete "landscape in a pot" with mountain peaks, waterfalls, slopes, rolling streams, and sometimes a temple, a bridge, a fisher man, animal, bird or forest.
