So what exactly is a Tasmanian Tiger?
The Tazzy Tiger/ Thylacine was the largest carnivorous marsupial in Tazmania. It resembled a canid but was not related to that family at all. In fact it's closest relatives alive today are the Quoll and the Tazmanian Devil.
The Thylacine was a unique creature and still is. It evolved to resemble a wolf because of the way it hunts and lives. However it is a marsupial because it has a back opening pouch. It's thin tapering tail is also sporting of the masupial family. The Tazzy Tiger hunted alone or in pairs at night. It ate kangaroos, wallaby, other small animals, and sadly sheep. The hunting tactic was apparently to jog over a long distance and gradually tire its prey. Eating sheep is the number one reason why it is extinct today. As it preyed on the sheep people began to think of this animal as their mortal enemy. A bounty was made. $2 for adult thylacines and $1 for pups and adolescents.
Thylacines bred in the winter and spring. Usually 1-2 young were raised at a time. Even though the pouch could have 4 pups.
After a period of 4 months pups exited their mother's pouch. They then stayed with their mom till the age of 9 months.
Breeding never happened under captive conditions however.
The face of the Thylacine is of a light brown with light markings around the eyes, mouth, and ears. The body of the animal is between a grayish brown, to a yellow brown hue. Dark brown stripes covered the hide.
