The TT is available with a choice of transversly mounted turbocharged engines and drive lines. There is a 180bhp version of Volkswagen's versatile 1.8 litre, four cylinder, twin cam, five-valve-per-cylinder engine. This is only slightly more powerful than the unit used in the A3 hatchback. a five-speed gearbox is employed and in the long-established Audi traditions, it drives the front wheels. Top speed is a respectable 140mph (225km/h).
However there is an alternate four wheel drive Quattro version and a top line TT powered by uprated 225bhp engine both of which use an electro-hydraulic distribution system. This is a good 18mph faster than the base version, being capable of 158mph (243km/h). A six speed gear box is employed and also the broad six spokes alloy wheels. |
