KALITHEA, RHODES ISLAND, GREECE
                           PADI - The Cavern Divers!

Present-day  Rhodes is a medieval/modern amalgam which impresses and fascinates visitors.  * Good  place to purchase natural sea sponges and shells.

Diving in Rhodes is controlled by
Archaelogical Department, and the only possibility for diving is in Kalithea Bay where there are 3 grottos or caverns.  In the field of scuba diving, Dive Med Centres dispose of instructors licensed by the Hellenic Federation as PADI, and others.

In September 1998, we went by cruise boat from Greece to Turkey.  There in  Rhodes Island, our dream was to scuba dive in the blue waters of the Mediterranean Sea.  We also went by taxi from Mandraki Harbour to kalithea.  It's built around a colourful pine-covered bay with old spas.

Cavern Diving Specialty:  It's the first level of diving in an overhead environment.   Along with geological formations, we discovered a network of passages and several fish and marine life.  Daylight and entrances were always visible.   As cavern explorers, we saw air bubbles trapped in roof of caverns and looking like mercury.  The average depth of the excursion was between 10-20 meters.  Waters are salted, extremely clear, calm, and temperate all year round.  The region is free of currents.  *This excursion is available to divers with their card "Open Water Diver"  in hand.   Don't forget to take it back!

Warning:  Don't run low on or out of air; ask for a tank (80 cubic feet with 3000 psi).
