DigitaL TC

Digital Banner

The Borg TC has been renamed to DigitaL, which allows for a wider range of totally new ideas and concepts in the TC. With it being renamed to DigitaL, the concept of the TC isn't just limited to the idea of Quake Borgs. This expands the possibilities for a far better TC. For more info on the DigitaL TC, click on the banner above.

Also be sure to check out the help page at the DigitaL site to see if you can lend a hand. There's also a Worldcraft screenshot below in the quake editors section which shows a shot from a level I just finished.

The Borg TC (beta)

THE BORG TC

Digital Reign The first beta version of the Borg TC is out, and it kicks ass! At 12 megs (5 megs zipped), it's also one of the most complete *beta* TC's out there.. so go check it out. I especially love that 4th level.. but anyways.. what are you doing reading this? Go download the Borg TC!!

This is definitely one of the better Quake TC's out there... it was given a 90 out of 100 on Talon's Strike, which is one of the highest scores he's given a TC thus far. Included in the TC are 5 new single player levels (the 4th by me), 2 new deathmatch levels, new weapons, new monsters, new sounds, and new graphics.

Here are just some of the new weapons included:

Alien TechnologyGrasshopper
Alien Tech: Alien Technology that will fire a projectile toward your enemy doing little damage. The Grasshopper: Shoots bolts of electricity that can jump from one enemy to another. Can also bound off walls in some situations. Careful, its an ammo eater.
Ultimate Alien TechMine Launcher
Ultimate Alien Tech: Rapid firing Alien Tech. Very handy in sticky situations. The Mine Launcher: Just fire a grenade and use the ";" key to detonate it. Watch the explosions and stay out of the way.

There's also a cool new teleporting feature that allows you to spawn off a teleport destination from which you can teleport yourself to later. To do this hit the "f" key to spawn off the position, go somewhere else and then hit the "g" key to teleport yourself back. Try it out to see how it works. It's a handy feature in single player levels because you can teleport yourself back to keyed doors after getting a key, or teleporting out of nasty situations, or even telefragging monsters if you're out of ammo. In deathmatches, it's a camper's dream with the mine launcher:) Also what you can do is spawn off a position at a door, then when the door opens, telefrag whoever runs through it!

If the keys that are set conflict with your current setup, then all you have to do is edit the autoexec.cfg and make the necessary changes. Impulse 60 spawns off teleport destinations, Impulse 61 teleports you to teleport destinations, and Impulse 15 detonates mines set by the mine launcher.

My BADASS Level

You see this? My BADASS Level just won the KILLER MAP AWARD at A World of Quake! Click on the award to download my level! I spent a lot of time working on that level and although some things didn't turn out the way I wanted them to, my level still turned out pretty damn good. This IS my first Quake level, so through most of my lev I was just fooling around with stuff and learning how to do things... some things may be pretty amateurish, but hey, I AM an amateur at making levs. I've built Doom levels before, but that's nothing compared to what it takes to make a Quake level.

Quake Editing

For all of you Levelord wannabe's out there, here are some of the best quake editors I've seen...

worldcraft button stoneless button qoole button bsp button quest button thred button

Of these 5 different editors that I've tried out, I'd have to say that Worldcraft and Stoneless are the best ones to use for making quake levels. Worldcraft is one of the easiest editors to use out there. The clear and easy to use interface makes this a great editor for beginners. It also runs smoother than almost every other editor out there on slower computers(like my p120). Stoneless is also another great editor because of it's power. With features like vertex manipulation and lighting preview, it's perfect for advanced editors out there who just want more control over their creations.

Worldcraft 1.5 is out!

Valve software finally released an update for Worldcraft, this being version 1.5 rather than version 2.0 as originally thought. This will be the last version of Worldcraft until Half-Life comes out, which will ship with Worldcraft 2.0. Go here to download Worldcraft 1.5. Vertex Manipulation

The biggest new feature in Worldcraft version 1.5 would probably be vertex manipulation. With it, editors have much more control in making exactly what they want to make. It works in the 3D window as well as the 2D windows, and you can even modify multiple vertices on multiple objects at once. Another cool new feature is the clipping tool, which allows you to cut an object (or objects) along a 2D plane to shape the brush the way you want it.

There are a ton of other new features in version 1.5, but there's also one new drawback that I've found... it's considerably slower than the older versions. It's most noticable in the 3D view... and even the wireframe view doesn't greatly speed things up like it did in version 1.1a. But there are a couple new things in this version that compensate for the slower speed... the visgroups have been almost totally redone, it's a lot easier to use and it allows you to "hide" certain areas of the map that you're not looking at. You can also place multiple camera perspectives in the map, so that when you want to get to one area of your level, you can just cycle through the camera views that you've placed, rather than moving through that slow 3D view.

Map tools bar «--The maptools bar has been changed to this colorful thing. I'm not sure but I think WC loses it's professional look with this toolbar.

Another thing I've found is that the vertex manipulation is kind of unstable. Worldcraft still allows you to make improper brushes without always warning you in the check map option.. and many times you can still compile these with qbsp. BUT when you run the map in the game you'll find that the brush turns into something other than what you made, a proper brush, but a different brush nonetheless. As long as you always make proper brushes you won't run into this problem though.

Well the bottom line is, one of the best editors out there just got even better, but it's still far from perfect. I'll probably still be using Worldcraft with Stoneless at the same time when I build a level, which is what I usually do. I still haven't found a perfect editor, and I don't think I ever will.
