Story: Cyrax was a servant of the Lin Kuei alongside Smoke, Sub-Zero, and many others. But, as with any mortal, time was an enemy he couldn't outrun or defeat. His expertise with nets began to falter, and he resigned himself to the Lin Kuei Grandmaster. But the Lin Kuei made sure that he could be salvaged.
The Lin Kuei had begun research into soul transfusion. They built a robot, and experimented with the loyal ninja Sektor, who volunteered for assimilation. With that successful transfusion, they were confident to do it again, and they did.
Unit LK-4D4 was built, the second prototype cyber-assassin. The Lin Kuei took Cyrax and infused his soul into the unit. Code named: Cyrax.
Meanwhile, Sub-Zero and Smoke had tried to escape assimilation. Although Sub-Zero was successful in his flight, Smoke was captured and prepared for immediate assimilation.
All three were programmed for the extermination of Sub-Zero. Cyrax set out, armed with a plasma net and bombs, to kill Sub-Zero. He was still searching for him when the invasion of Earth Realm began.
Being soulless, Cyrax was undetected by Kahn and still searched for Sub-Zero.

Sub-Zero captured the cyber-assassin and hacked into his CPU. He then gave Cyrax new orders: Destroy Shao Kahn. Cyrax made for the fortress of Kahn, and crossed over into the Outworld.
When Kahn was destroyed, Cyrax waited patiently for new orders from Lin Kuei Headquarters. None came. Cyrax's CPU was not designed to go long without orders, and so it blew. Cyrax malfunctioned, and he had been programmed to head back for Lin Kuei headquarters when that occurred. But, being stranded in the Outworld, he had no chance of ever reaching them.

Cyrax wandered endlessly until he was caught in the violent sandstorms of Jade's Desert, buried beyond hope of setting himself free. And so he stayed under the sand, the same thoughts going through his mechanical mind, for two years.
It was after those two years that he was rescued by the Lin Kuei, who had reformed. They reformed him, but found him strangely different from when he originally set out to murder Sub-Zero. They cast him out again to find and terminate Sub-Zero, but onto the . . . sands of time shall reveal the true extent of the mysterious trauma he went through in Jade's Desert.
But Cyrax knows something that the Lin Kuei don't. Something that may be vital to his mission, and his true priorities. Sub-Zero accessed his CPU. Does this mean Cyrax's loyalties lie with the renegade Lin Kuei ninja? On Cyrax himself knows . . .
