Now it is time to start the video portion of the unit. Introduce the film with a brief summary and explain the reference to Columbine (the high school in Colorado where two students used guns to kill 12 classmates and a teacher before shooting themselves in 1998. The film is an attempt to understand the culture of gun violence in the US). Instructors are encouraged to watch the film in its entirety beforehand, isolating key scenes for discussion. Some of the students may have seen the film, but few if any will have analyzed it at the level that follows. Pass out a list of comprehension questions and review for comprehension (see BFC Appendix 3). These questions are designed to keep students on-task during the screening and ensure that they are focused on the key points. Stress that the portion of the video to be watched today attempts to define the problem of gun violence in the U.S.[2] Reiterate that this constitutes an example of the first section of their upcoming essays and speeches: Before you can talk about causes, you must have a thorough understanding of the nature of the problem. We will also see an example of the second section of their upcoming assignment: Dismissing popularly held but erroneous or insufficient explanations of causation.

              After reviewing the questions for comprehension and vocabulary, begin the video. Stop the video frequently to reinforce key points and quiz for comprehension. Continue the video, stopping as the instructor sees fit for discussion and reinforcement, until the end of the interview with Marylin Manson at 47:00. Review the comprehension questions. Then, for homework, have students write one page in response to the following prompts: 1. Write a half-page response to today's segment of the film. What information surprised you? Write two questions for class discussion. 2. What do you think Marylin Manson meant when he said:  "It's a campaign of fear and consumption; keep everyone afraid, and they will consume."
