The Kerling Waterfalls |

The main waterfall How to get there?Kerling town is not difficult to find. It is a "one street settlement". But little known, there is a much larger village community hidden away, a stone throw from this township dissected by the Trunk Road 1. Hidden from view of those passing by on the Main Road. To reach this picnic spot or waterfall go to the Kerling Town as we all know it. Then head north. About half kilometer away from the edge of town, a road turns to the right crossing over the railway track.

Here at this junction, there would be sign for New Village and Hot Spring, hinting that there should be lots of happenings. Enter this junction and cross a railroad track. First left turn upon seeing the New Village, would be the main road for the village. Just proceed straight along this road with many bumps. In some junctions, most likely not, you could be prompted by the signage for the Hot spring. Also while driving along this road, please take note that on the right side, are a couple of branch roads. Left, just one row of houses, scattered along the roadside. Soon, after 200 meters, you will leave behind the New Village. More signs of new housing areas on the open area on the left, this time. Open country and more signs for the Hot Springs may soon pop up to guide you along. The road conditions? At the New village paved. Just after the village, sandy for a short stretch and then nearer the forest fringe, paved again. The road led into the area of the Hot Spring. Paved road ends. Don't turn right into the Hot Spring area. Go on straight into the laterite track. Then past a timber collection camp and cross the make shift bridge. Just another 2 kilometers down the track, on your left, there should be a small steel frame for what was once a sign. The jungle cleared slightly for the space of car parking lot. Stop there and look down the ravine. There should be 2 trails. The river which was all the while on your left, at this point would now be down in a ravine. Good luck to your search. Description of place Sungei Kerling at this stage was a fair size river. In good weather, the water is plentiful and crystal clear. It started its journey from the Lone Pine Hills in Fraser's Hills some 24 kilometers upstream. In this undulating timber track that you are following with your normal sedan is about 20 kilometers inland. There would be 2 bridges. You had just crossed the first one. The second one was never replaced. Only heavy duty 4X4 could manage this medium size fast flowing river. So forget about that 20 kilometers stretch, just focus on the first 2/3 kilometers and the Waterfall. All the way now, the river is still in its "rushing through the rapids" stage. Beautiful small pools and good spots for day trippers. They were all scenic and pristine. That is the reason as to why the whole place was once considered for designation as a Park by the Selangor Government. Evidences of efforts made years ago, were the left over of signage erected along the river bank to denote suitable choice spots. By now, almost all of these had disappeared leaving behind the tiny steel frame works. When there is a heavy down pour among hills, the river becomes ferocious and very unsafe for those still hanging around. In many parts, the banks where picnickers sorted are places down a steep slope. Will be hazardous when a quick exit is needed. Here the picture shows the waterfall. A place where the river had to make a vertical drop. Next, a couple of slopes on this main track are quite steep, after a rain, the clay ground may be slippery for cars with normal road tires. So would be your ability to navigate your sedan up the slippery tracks. The drop of the waterfall with the volume of water undoubtedly confirmed that it is large enough to be graded as a Waterfall. The picture also confirmed the existence of a distinctly large pool after the waterfall. Fairly size at about 18 meters diameter and deep enough for you to jump off a boulder on the bank. I had mentioned that there were many spots to pick for swimming and picnic. The point of the waterfall would be the highlight. But again, you have to decide which kind of river scene is best suited to meet your expectations. I personally feel that finding the exact spot as trail head for this waterfall among the forest river bank is tedious. Due the lack of prompts and signage. So be prepared to enjoy your outing in other spots other than at this waterfall. The scene you have seen here is just a lure to test out your hunting ability. What is recommended The track as I know is lonely, without movement of Timber trucks. Fairly broad for 2 vehicles to pass by. If that type of environment persist, then you need not worry about finding a suitable parking place. The car is parked only meters from where you would spend your time. Of course, there are also spots where you can place your car out of helm's way. The place is very well shaded. So you can imagine what you need to be prepared for. If you do have any children among your group, exercise extreme caution when choosing your spot. Banks upstream nearer the second bridge, about 3 kilometers away, are much flatter areas where the river bed comes quite close to the same as the dry ground level. That would be a better choice. Remember - Avoid the boulders and the rushing river. The spot where the waterfall is definitely a "No-No" for many. There had been a few tragedy in the past. You need to hike down a very steep slope. The only empty place are those on top of boulders. Any mishap there would be a drop from the bank into the river with swift flowing water.
