Alzheimer's Disease
Dementia is a brain disorder that affects someone's ability to carry our daily activities. The most common one is Alzheimer's Disease. Never cells dies which effect thought, memory, and language.
AD is named after Dr. Alois Alzheimer, a German doctor. In 1906 he noticed changes in the brain tissues of an individual who had died of an unusual mental illness. He found abnormal clumps and tangled bundles of fibers. Today these abnormal findings are called AD.
The incidence of dementia increases rapidly doubles for every five years beyond age 65. There are several stages with symptoms.
EARLY Stage
Trouble remembering recent events and conversations
Cooking and shopping become more difficult
Tendency to lose things.
Loss of ability to manage finances.
MIDDLE Stage
Anger and paranoia
Wandering
Fear of bathing
Violent behavior<
Loss of coordination
LATE Stage
Inability to communicate
Loses ability to walk
Loses ability to smile
Seizures may occur
Weight loss
As symptoms increase there is a bigger burden on caregivers and they often need some type of support.
With regard to treatment, some drugs have proven helpful but there is still much research to provide better treatment. It has been shown that the elderly who use their minds more, ore less likely to develop the disease or at least postpone the onset. Such activities include:
Watching jeopardy
