2009 Toi's Challenge
Location

The Toi's Challenge course is an 18k roughly circular route starting and finishing at the Whakatane Harrier Clubrooms in Rex Morpeth Park in the centre of town.
This map shows the route  rising above the town overlooking the Whakatane Harbour and river mouth.  It hugs the cliff edge around Kohi Point before dropping down to Otarawairere, and on to Ohope beach. Leaving the beach the course takes athletes through beautiful undulating bush tracks (the Nga Tapuwae o Toi track) before returning to Rex Morpeth Park
The Whakatane river mouth looking out to Whale Island - walkway route on the right.
From the bushy clifftop path with its magnificent coastal views, the athletes descend to deserted Otarawairere beach.
They climb over a steep spur to Ohope beach, then enter the undulating forest paths of the Ohope beach reserve.
The beach sections offer a welcome change of terrain and pace.  Here the athletes visit the deserted Otarawairere beach before reaching the bush tracks again
