Personality: A born natural fighter, Sanosuke possesses unusual physical strength and he can use the Horse Chopping Sword at ease. He believes in other people's rights and does not like it when people get bullied. However, his personality is a little on the rough side, and tends to get on peoples nerves. Sanosuke, in some ways, like Yahiko because he wants to be strong so that he will never lose a friend or someone he honors again. This is why he risked his life for Megumi and why he chose to risk his life to learn Futaenokiwami from Anzi. Because of what happened to his mentor Soujo, the Sekihoutai leader, he detests the Meiji government. He even tried to blow up some government buildings once with an old friend who also used to be part of the Sekihoutai, but was stopped by Kenshin.
Background: At a young age, Sano was part of the Sekihoutai and idolized the Sekihoutai's leader Sagara Soujo. Although Sano is not related to Souzou, he adopted Soujo's last name. After the Sekihoutai was disbanded, Sano became a "Kenkaya", a person who is paid by others to fight someone hence was known as Sanza. While travelling around Japan buying fights, someone hire Sano to fight Kenshin. Sano then does a little research about Kenshin and finds out that he was part of the Ishinshishi. His anger toward the Ishinshishi gives him even more incentive to fight Kenshin. Sano loses the fight, but after a long talk with Kenshin, he realizes that Kenshin is not like the Ishinshishi who killed his leader. From then, he realize the real meaning of the reform, and gave up his obstinacy. He gains a certain respect for Kenshin, and this respect grows as he gets to know him better...
Making of Sagara Sanosuke: You can tell that I am a fan of the Shinsengumi at a glance. The model for Sanosuke is the captain of the tenth unit of the Shinsengumi, Harata Sanosuke. He was known as one of the five most handsome men of the Shinsengumi and a spear-wielder of great strength. As the Shinsengumi chose the place of battle, he must have loved to fight, and had a rough, stormy temper in an emergency. But, perhaps because of his humble origins, he had his soft side. He thought a great deal of his unit and took care of those beneath him. Judging his likes and dislikes, he seems like the older brother type from a boy's magazine. He is said to have died on the battlefield of the Ueno War, but some say he survived to become a legendary bandit chief. Looking from the eyes of the people of the time, a very romantic figure. Of course, I liked him too, and put him in as Sanosuke. I am extremely happy that Sano has become so popular, but recently he also become the Most Likely Character to Have His Name Misspelled. I have seen all kinds of different kanji for "Sanosuke". I even saw "Sasuke", and wanted to say "Hey, he's not a ninja" but by now, I have kind of given up.
When I did the design, as you know, I did not have a certain popular character in mind. Say, it is the hairstyle's fault. My model for Sano was from the main character, Lamp, from "Arabian Lamp". During my assistant days, I was doodling in my sketchbook and drew a Japanese-style Lamp. I changed it around a little, but it is the actual Sano.
