Toshi was the lead vocalist for the band. He has an incredible voice, a harmonic yet raspy style. He has a very good range that enabled to work with all the different X songs.
His voice was very well suited to X's music as he could keep pace with the trademark heavy riffs of X's faster songs and soften his voice to a very delicate tone to accompany the dramastic ballads.
During the concerts he could only sing for 2-3 hours, due to the length and such of X's songs. He was the most mobile of the members, and often made use of such on stage. He was a very charismatic individual and was very effective at bringing the crowd into the music.
He and Yoshiki were good friends growing up and formed the orignial band in 1982. From 1987 to 1997, Toshi and X gave the music industry everything they had. The stress of this constant exposure and effort is said to have affected the band's personal relationship, thus their eventual break-up. Toshi was also said to have gotten more involved with a Malaysian religion, that allowed to find personal fufillment.
Toshi has recorded several solo albums, all of which relfect a differnt person and mood than X. Much more of Toshi's inner emotion can be heard and the lyrics carry a heavy mood.
