Michael Klim entered the international spotlight after a stunning
performance at the FINA 1998 World Swimming Championships. There
he won 7 medals from 7 starts, four of them were gold. Hailed as "King
Klim", Michael started swimming at a very young age. His parents were
both very athletic and so it was only natural for Michael and his sister,
Anna, to inherit this athleticism. They both begun swimming while living in
India, which is quite normal considering that "it was so unbelievably hot".
However, while Anna chose tennis, Michael decided to pursue a career in
the water (his sister claims that he is still a good tennis player).

    Training at the AIS, Klim was considered to be a swimmer with great potential. He entered the
    tutelage of Gennadi Touretski, the Russian coach who has helped swimmers such as Aleksandr
    Popov to success. It was at the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta where Klim was fated to fulfill
    the expectations that Swimming Australia held for him. In his favorite event, the 200m
    freestyle, where he was ranked No. 1 in the world, Klim failed to make the final. He did
    significantly better in the 100m butterfly and won a silver medal in the 4x100m medley relay.

    From his disappointment in Atlanta, it seemed it would be hard for him to bounce back.
    However, in a post Olympic meet in France, he beat double gold medalist, Denis Pankratov, in
    the 100m butterfly. There he swam a personal best time and won the US$4000 prize money.

    Since then, he has gone from strength to strength, breaking personal best times, Australian
    records, Championship records, and Commonwealth records almost each time he swims. In
    1997 at the Australian World Championship trials, Michael broke Pankratov's world record in
    the 100m butterfly with a time of 52.15s. He has also broken the short course world record in
    the same event with his time of 51.07s, winning a new car in the process. He also did well in the
    Commonwealth Games in Kuala Lumpur in September, winning 3 gold medals.

    Michael Klim is now a major star of Australian swimming. Predictions are coming from
    everyone that he will break more world records. Klim is expected to earn millions between now
    and the 2000 Olympic Games from sponsorship deals. He was named Telstra Australian
    Swimmer of the Year in 1998.

    He has just finished competing in the Pan Pacific Swimming Championships held in Sydney,
    August 22 - 29. He picked up 4 gold medals in the 4x100m and 4x200m freestyle (world
    record) relays, the 100m butterfly and the 100m freestyle. Also a silver in the 200m freestyle.
