TULHAS RESTAURANT
A Place of History while you wait for your meal
The circular opening you see near the entrance isn't just a hole in the ground. In fact the name of this restaurant comes from that hole, which is the last visible part of the medieval granaries located here. The Portuguese name for grannies is Tulhas hence Tulhas Bar.
The grannies were found in the early eighties, when the actual owners of Tulhas Bar decided to use the old building to open a small cozy restaurant. While leveling the ground to gain some height in a low ceiling area, first coins and pieces of ceramic, dated back to the XV and XVI centuries were found. The workers were told to stop by the owners, which then called the archaeology department of Sintra's Town Hall, under the direction of José Cardim Ribeiro (actually the director of the Archaeological Museum of São Miguel de Odrinhas a place to visit if you are staying around Sintra to study the area.
The following months revealed some more materials and a group of granaries that helped build a plausible story. At the time José Cardim Ribeiro wrote about the "touristical interest" of the place, stating that the granaries had been opened on a slope facing south, bathed by the sun most of the day - the ideal situation for the cereais placed inside the hollow containers. The first granaries were built around the 12th or 13th century, maybe even earlier during the Moslem occupation of the area.
New construction built on the hillside after the 15th century must have covered the granaries, and Cardim Ribeiro hints that a sudden demolition of the houses, maybe due to an earthquake (there was a violent one here in 1579) filled up the granaries.
The materials found are today part of the medieval collection that will be on exhibit at the Archaeological Musem of São Miguel de Odrinhas on the near future. As for Tulhas Bar, it got a name no one had though about.. and a mysterious hole that puzzles everyone that comes in.. until they sit down at a table and read this unpretentious note, while in the kitchen our chief prepares a dish that will want to make you comeback.
