American Government (GO 101)

Anthony A. Ball, Instructor

Government Links, Spring 2001

I.   Federal Government Links

Follow these links to official government sites. You can find information about your representatives in Congress, the Executive Branch or the federal judiciary. For students doing research involving statistics, the Census Bureau site is an excellent place to start.
U.S. House of Representatives
U.S. Senate
White House
Cabinet Agencies
The Judiciary
Census Bureau (Part of Commerce Department)
II.   State of Connecticut Links

The official web page for the State of Connecticut will link you to the legislative, executive and judicial branches of state government, various agencies and commissions, statutes and regulations, and local governments. It is an invaluable resource; you can even find out here if the Treasurer is holding unclaimed funds in your name!
III.   Political Parties
Compare these web sites.  What are some of the differences among the major political parties?   Why have third parties had such limited success in American politics?
Democratic Party Libertarian Party
Communist Party Natural Law Party
Green Party Reform Party
  Republican Party

IV.   Advocacy/Special Interest/Public Interest/Research Groups

There are thousands of organizations that have sites on the Internet. These are just a very small sample to help the student understand how this technology may be used to affect public opinion and public policy. Remember, when using the Internet for research, always consider the source of your information. Is the organization commercial or non-profit? Does it represent a particular constituency or point of view? Just because you found it on the Net doesn't make it true! Check your facts!
American Association of Retired Persons Nat'l Abortion & Reproductive Rights Action League
Annenberg Public Policy Center Nat'l Ass'n for the Advancement of Colored People
Business Roundtable National Education Association
Christian Coalition National Organization for Women
Citizens Against Government Waste National Rifle Association
Electronic Frontier Foundation National Right to Life Committee
