What to eat? | |||||||||||||||||||
Everyone wants to know what you're doing when you are losing weight. But everyone is different and what works for one may not work for someone else. I've read a couple of good books, "The New Glucose Revolution," and "The Good Carb Cookbook: Secrets to Eating Low on the Glycemic Index." Both are great and have some really good recipes. I read them and got a good idea of which foods I was eating that were moderate to high G.I. and replaced them with a low G.I. alternative. A rating of 55 and under is low G.I., so I replaced white bread with low G.I. bread. Here are some sample meal ideas. Breakfast: A bowl of Special K Red Berries mixed with All Bran, low-fat milk, half a banana cut into the cereal, and two slices of low G.I. toast with a little butter and some strawberry spread (100% fruit with no sugar added). Lunch: A grilled turkey or ham and cheese sandwich on low G.I. bread, a bowl of Minestrone soup, and a pear. For variety, some days I use a tortilla wrap instead of bread and spread it with low-fat mayo, add lettuce, tomato, turkey or ham and cheese, and fold it up like a burrito. I love wraps! Dinner: I select from a wide variety of my favorite low G.I. recipes, which you will find on this site. Our favorites would be Mexican Lasagna, Slim Spaghetti Pie, Penne with Ham and Asparagus, Pizza Chicken, Beef Kebabs with Rosemary Roasted Sweet Potatoes, or Pot Roast with Sour Cream Gravy. Or I look through my Better Homes and Gardens New Dieters Cookbook and look for those recipes that I can be fairly certain are low G.I. based on the ingredients. After a while, you begin to recognize low G.I. recipes when you see them. Dessert: I generally have one scoop of strawberry low-fat frozen yogurt. I never eat anything within three hours of bedtime, not so much as one grape. This was a tip I got from Oprah, and it works for me! When you feel that little bit of a craving at night ... not really hungry but you just wanna eat something ... think of that as your body saying "I need some energy, do you want to feed me or should I go into your fat stores?" I'd rather let it burn the fat. |
