*Sternenberg Family Album*

Edward C. was my husband's father. Otto B. and Ida Christine WITTE were his grandparents. Henry A., Jr. was Edward's cousin. Henry A. and Fritz C. were my husband's great-uncles. Catherine was his aunt by marriage. Katherine was Edward's sister. William O. was my husband's uncle. We are not sure of the relationship of the other names and will appreciate any help that someone can give us.
These are the names of my husbands relatives that are buried in the Forest Hill Cemetary, Birmingham, Jefferson Co.,Alabama. I want to personally thank a very kind lady, by the name of Joan, who was gracious enough to go to Forest Hill Cemetery to get the names and dates for me. Joan, you know who you are. Thank you ever so much! Some of the dates of death I got from the Social Security Death Index. I would like to be able to find out when the Sternenberg's came to Alabama. William O. told my husband one time that his grandfather had a trading post near one of the Great Lakes. I would love to confirm this. Also, would love to find out when the Sternenberg's immigrated to this country and if they came from Germany, Switzerland, or France.

OF INTEREST

The German surname Sternenberg is local in origin, being one of those names that is descriptive of the place where a man once lived or where he held land. In this case, the surname is derived from the place of residence of the original bearer, that is Sternenburg, a village in Freiburg. The actual name Sternenburg is, in turn, derived from a compound of two German words - "stern" meaning 'star' and "berg" meaning "mountain".

Different spelling variations of the name I have discovered are: Sternenberg, Sternenburg, Sternberg, Sterrenberg, Sternemberg. I found a note on one item that says that the more commonly rendered version today is Sternburg.
