KING, OUR FIRST SCOUTMASTER Born in Concordia, Kansas, and March 16, 1898. He died February 25, 1969 in Mexico. At the time of his death he was a resident of Phoenix, Arizona. King graduated from Topeka High School and Washburn University. He was active in Topeka music circles, and the First Christian Church. He served with the US Naval Reserve from 1942-1945, being discharged as a Lt. Commander. He was a 32 degree Mason and a Shiner. He spent most of his working years in the insurance business, receiving his Life Underwriter’s designation in 1936, and retiring in 1963. A fellow Scoutmaster said in tribute to Lyman King - “Sound and lasting structures are built on solid foundations. The fact that Troop 7 is celebrating its 50th year of continuous service could contain some kind of tribute to the leadership and ability of its first Scoutmaster. Great respect and appreciation should be extended every good Scoutmaster of the land, and this must, of course, include the first Scoutmaster of Troop 7.” (Reprinted from the 50th Souvenir Album.) |
