1955 Topps Bubblegum jumped on the buckskinned bandwagon to produce 80 colorful picture cards from the Walt Disney summer hit movie “Davy Crockett King of the Wild Frontier” starring Fess Parker and Buddy Ebsen! Wrapped in bright red and yellow 1-cent and 5-cent wax packs each with a slab of pink bubble gum the series quickly became the must have pop-item of every kid when they were finally released in 1956! The first series of 80 cards were printed on gray or sometimes white cardboard with descriptive storylines on orange colored backs! You could see the movie unfold as you put each new card in it’s numbered sequence from Davy and George’s Indian fight with Red Stick, to the Big Foot Mason shooting match and Davy’s Congressional speech, all the way up to when Davy gave ‘em what fer at the Alamo! The cards were so popular that Topps released a second even better set in the summer of 1956. This second set of 80 cards, with the letter "A", were more dynamic with richer movie scenes and personal with Davy's own first person story description on their green colored backs! Unfortunately the greenback series was available for only a short time making this set harder to get today!! But what ever set orange or green the 1956 Topps Davy Crockett issues were and are an all-time favorite of “kids” everywhere! |
