Infertile Arab couples face major
challenges on medical and social levels:
Medical Level:
.
Doctors in Arab countries know from
their personal experience that the rate of infertility is high, the
rate of infertility among Arab married couples is 16%.
However, treatment is still not readily available. The population
in oil-rich Arab countries is about 30 million which includes
six Arab countries: Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman,
Qatar, Saudi Arabia and United Arab Emirates.
Social Level:
-
In oil-rich Arab countries, infertility
is taboo to Arab couples.
-
Usually, once infertility is diagnosed,
the Arab couple's first question is where do we find treatment abroad?
They favor treatment abroad for several reasons:
.
-
It is imperative to keep their infertility
confidential. They feel the confidentiality issue is better controlled
by seeking treatment abroad.
-
Arab executives will pay in full for
the infertility treatment. In fact, they even pay large deposits toward
a future treatment. According to Tampa General Hospital: Regina Grisales,
International Patient Coordinator, “I got a wire
for $75,000 for a deposit. The patient isn't even here".

Infertile couples are at risk of
losing their social status and their wealth:
-
Most Arab companies are family owned
with an average net worth of over 50 million dollars. A son's position
in the company is in jeopardy if he does not have children and his loss
of revenue would be in millions of dollars due to infertility.
-
Infertile couples are not included in
many social events where business deals are negotiated and made. Typically,
those business deals are in millions of dollars.
-
Fertile couples develop stronger social
ties due to their children interaction with others and become more dominant
in the family business.
-
Clearly, infertile Arab couples are
highly motivated to seek treatment. They have the money to pay for it and
usually they are anxious to get started.
.
-
Estimated Number of self
pay Infertile Arab couples who are likely to seek treatment:

= 16%
-
Number of infertile Arab couples:
