Today we use computers to draw a 3-D model of the structure, pretty much as laying out the "skeleton" of any building, be it a library, hospital, warehouse, supermarket or expansion.
This model also stores information about every axial and moment load for each connection, the bolts and welds required, material sizes and grades, and last but not least, the piecemarks that help to identify every steel member on its path from the paper drawing, the purchase order, the fabrication, the shipping and finally, the erection on site.
It is nice to see the trucks filled with steel pieces that used to be only drawn on the computer, and then the buildings once they are erected...
