Recap of recent meetings |
The Flemingdon Park ODSP Recipient's Support Group meets the second (2nd) Friday of each month at Flemingdon Health Centre, 10 Gateway Boulevard, located at the south-east corner of Don Mills Road and Overlea Boulevard (See Map..) |
The Flemingdon ODSP / OW Recipient's Support Group has been meeting regularly at 10 Gateway Blvd. from 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm. on the 2nd Friday of each month. Individuals have brought their own questions / concerns about their benefits, the service provided by their local office and ongoing legal problems. Each meeting has been unique and directed by current issues and the needs of those in attendance |
On Friday November 10, 2006 the group was privileged to have a visit from Kathleen Wynne, MPP for Don Valley West and current Minister of Education. Attendees voiced their opinions on a variety of subjects affecting their standard of living while on ODSP. Most people felt that they are pleased with some aspects of the new ODSP Employment Supports plan that had started earlier that month; the Extended Health Care for those in need of benefits not covered by employers are a definite plus. However, it was felt that all the training and technology in the world would be wasted if public education and employer awareness, toward the disabled, were not implemented as well. The Human Rights Code and the AODA need to be more widely publicized and enforced. We're still talking about these issues today. |
Recent... topics discussed included: applying for ODSP while receiving OW, appealing a rejected application and the role of the legal clinic, can a person work while receiving benefits, leaving the province / country while on ODSP, what drug and dental services are available, changes that occur at age 65, employment supports, training for foreign trained professionals and the parameters for clients receiving the community participation allowance while on ODSP / OW. As well, the Social Benefits Tribunal hearings which are now also being conducted over the phone as well as in person. As mentioned we occasionally get elected officials coming out to meetings... for example Jane Pitfield (former city councillor) has attended. ( Click here for some details on that.). The local councillor, John Parker, expressed an interest when he was still new; we last saw him at Kathleen Wynne's town hall meeting. The Toronto Star's Joe Fiorito came out one time. CORRECTION: next meeting is this Friday, August 14, 2009. |
Also in 2006, Sharon Dever received an "Unsung Hero" award from the City of Toronto. Here's a small video clip (169k, MPEG format) |
