Submitted by Jerry Bliss. EDITED 05FEB02 From D. Scott
Hendricks 57-59. QM GANG. "The land in the background is an island called
ChiChi Jima, where we stopped to replenish the beer supply for a group of
U.S. servicemen. The Chief on deck, in the shot, was a Gunners Mate. Can't
think of his name. He was in charge of the deck gang. At the time we still
had a billet for a gunners mate." If anyone can ID personnel please let
Jack Hester know at snook592@erols.com
Addtional info, 13FEB02.......from Jerry Bliss.....Question...
who was Gunners Mate on ROCK.... he was not
a chief, but was 2nd class LUDWIG. I worked on his deck gang.
Hendrix is right.... that is Chi Chi Jima (shima) island. I was there,
too. Had top-side watch that night.... darkest place in the world, no moon,
etc... I nearly walked over the side.
And from Jack Hester.......Aha....CHI CHI SHIMA....they had a
spook (CT's) station there and they
monitored all of our CW transmission in an attempt to pick up certain
characteristics in our sending that could eventually
identify the boat. Many is the time I would be trying to reach some
shore station to take my traffic and even though they wouldn't take my
traffic they did send a letter to the command saying that so and so at
time such and such was detected with
the following characteristic etc etc....

Per an E-mail from Jack................."For all you guys that were
on the Rock when we went north
to Alaska ...the attached is a certified copy of John Schmidt's visit
to the "Red Dog Saloon" in
Juneau. I think the timeframe was either 59 or 60.......CRS setting
in.....As
you look at the names of some of the witnesses it may bring back some
memories........"
The next 3 are from D. Scott Hendricks, a QM on the 57-59 crew. He also
identified the pic at the top of the page as at Chi Chi Shima.
D. Scott Hendricks
Jim Mazza (QM3) in crews mess.
Per Scott...."The Officer on the bridge was called "Bear" , he
was a wrestling champ when he was at Annapolis. The Captain at that time
was LCDR Leif Tollefson. (wanted to be called "sweed", on the boat)" Anyone
remember what the Lt.'s name was??????? 13FEB 02 edit. According
to Jerry Bliss, One of the comments Scott had on one of the pictures on
your ROCK site; He was wondering about the name of the officer who was
a champion wrestler. That would be Pete Blair. Sadly Pete passed away a
few years ago from cancer. Sailor, REST YOUR OARS!
Keep on sending in those photos. I'll keep putting them up.
ALSO if any of you have...."SEA STORIES" Send them in and I'll put
them up. Larry
