Kinixys belliana- Bell's hingeback tortoise Origin: Africa
These are simply put one of the most personable tortoises I've had the pleasure of working with. They are definitely not a species lacking in character. This species has more of a smooth and cylindrical appearance than the others of the genus.
In terms of husbandry, most references recommend an omniverous diet. I've found that at least with my group of animals, they are actually more herbivorous rather than omniverous and readily eat a variety of greens and other vegetables. Access to a water bowl should be provided at all times as they will fully utilize it. Although they are not considered a "humid species" such as the K. erosa or K. homeana, I have found they do best in moderately humid environs. Breeding occurs throughout the late spring and summer.
There are a variety of subspecies including K. b. nogueyi, K. b. spekii, and K. b. belliana.
