Heaven Cannot Wait

Part 2: Keeping a promise
"You're so lazy," Shinya observed.
Manami was sprawled on his dining
room chair again. She wore her black vinyl pants again but this time she
wore a light blue shirt that matched her sunglasses.
"Nnn," the angel moaned despondently.
"Are you sure you're my guardian angel?" He asked, just before taking a
bite out of his breakfast.
"Nnhnn?!"
"Right."
There was a sound from the door, "You've got mail," Manami said, in
annoying internet server voice.
"Get it, would you? I'm kind of busy."
"It's your assignment."
"It's your mission."
"It's your life."
"Yours, too. Besides, you're not doing anything." Shinya watched the
angel stumble out of the chair and towards the door. "What kind of guardian
angel, are you, anyway?" He heard a growl from the door.
"Give it to me, doggy--" Manami threatened, wearily.
"You're not fighting with my dog, are you?" Shinya called. "His name is
Puppy. I thought I told you that already."
"Give it, Puppy, or Shinya will die." Shinya glared in the direction of
Manami's voice. She didn't have to say it like that. Manami came back,
with tired steps as Puppy followed behind. She opened it with a yawn then
read, "By Friday, March 11, Shinya must keep an important promise or he well
die promptly at 5:00 p.m." She yawned again and fell asleep.
"Manami!" Shinya yelled, using the voice he used on Kyo, when he fell
asleep in the damndest of places. The angel jerked awake.
"Yes,'m?"
"So, all I have to do is keep a promise?"
Manami shook her head. "Not just any promise. An important promise. You
must distinguish between the two. You're pretty bright. I'll let you do
this one on your own."
She placed her head back against the chair, as if she was about to sleep
just as Shinya said, "You can't do that! I need you! What if I get into
trouble?"
"You--? Get into trouble? You couldn't get into trouble if it smacked
you in the--wait a minute," She sat up, abruptly, "Considering your band
members, I'm not so sure. You might need me on this one." She yawned then
said, "But what does it matter? You performed a Live this past
Saturday--very well, I might add--and you've got this whole week off. What
do you need me for?"
"Do you get any sleep at all?"
"Not since I met your friend Kyo. He likes to drink, do you know that?"
Manami slipped a little more comfortably into the chair. "but I don't want
to go out with him, anymore."
"Why not? He likes you a lot." Ever since Kyo found out that Manami was
Shinya's "cousin", Kyo was being a little more than friendly with her. Even
to the point of telling Shinya to get lost. Shinya stabbed at his food with
irritation. She's my angel! He had wanted to yell at Kyo but had kept
silent.
"Hounto desu ka?"
"Hounto desu. So, why not?"
"I'm tired of dragging him home. My body aches."
"Welcome to the world of Dir en grey."
"You guys drag him home?"
"Sometimes. Other times, we have a car."
"Wish I had a car. . ." She mumbled, as she trailed off to sleep.
Shinya shook his head. Those two belonged together. They could definitely
sleep. The phone rang and he went to get it.
"Moshi moshi?"
"Hi, Shinya."
"Oh, hi, Die."
"What do you mean, oh?" Shinya was about to apologize just as Die said,
"Nevermind. I was kind of wondering. . ."
"Hm?"
"Are you doing anything this week?"
"Not. . .really."
"Oh! Oh, good."
There was an awkward silence as the drummer asked, slowly, "Dooshite?"
"Because Kaoru, Toshiya, Kyo and I were thinking. . .wouldn't it be neat,
if we went to a hot spring resort?" (Bwahahah! Somebody had to do it. But
it's not as if anything's going to happen there. Well. . .)
"Yeah," he said, faintly. He glared at Manami as she snored.
"Shinya--are you still there?" Die asked, with a trace of worry.
"Yeah."
"So, can you come?"
"Uh, yeah," Shinya managed just as Manami snickered.
"Are you sure?"
"Hai hai!" Shinya said a little hastily then hung up the phone. "What
do you find so funny?"
"I'm just remembering your face from Friday. When Die--uh--how should I
say this tactfully--saved you." Manami removed her shades and smiled at the
blush creeping across his face. "Yes, that's the look." She stretched out
then smiled again at him, "And all he did was look at you for a very long
time. Come to think of it--whenever he looks at you, you blush. Got a
crush?"
Shinya put a hand to his face as if to stop his face from betraying him.
"No."
"Well," she said, dubiously, "Anyway, you sure you can do this?"
"What do you mean?"
Puppy jumped into Manami's lap. She stroked his fur and said, "When Die
looks at you, you blush, correct?"
"Er--" was all he said.
Manami took that as a yes as she went on. "That's with your clothes on.
Can you handle him with your clothes off?"
Shinya's eyes widened as he blushed again. Then he paled. Die? Staring
at him like that? He felt vulnerable enough as it was with his clothes on,
but without the benefit of it's precious cover. . .
Manami looked at him, concerned. "Maybe you better sit." He did so.
She chewed her lip, worriedly. "Daijyobuka?"
He nodded, "Do you think I could--cancel--this trip?"
"Did you promise?"
"No."
"I don't see why not."
"But what do I tell them?"
"It's for health reasons."
"Nani?"
"Just say that if Die looks at you like that while you're naked, either
he or you might end up getting a nosebleed."
He glared at her.
She shrugged.
The phone rang.
"Moshi moshi?"
"Hi, Shinya."
"Oh, hi, Kaoru."
"Did Die call you?"
"Yeah."
"You don't sound too well," Kaoru observed.
"Daijyobu."
"So, are you coming?"
"Well, about that--" Manami began to chuckle. Shinya tried not to think
murderous thought at her. "I told Die that I was coming, but now, I'm not
so sure."
There was a bit of conversation in the background that went something
like this:
Toshiya: "So, what did he say? Is he coming?"
Kaoru: "He having his doubts."
Toshiya: "Oh, no. All five of us have to go, not just four!"
Kaoru: "I haven't really gotten to the reason yet. Calm down."
Toshiya: "Make him promise. Then he has to come."
"I'm not promising anything!" Shinya blurted out.
"If you're thinking about avoiding this assignment by trying not to
promise anyone anything, you've got another thing coming," Manami spoke up
just as the conversation on the other side, continued.
Kaoru (to Toshiya): "He said he's not promising anything."
Toshiya: "Give me that phone."
Kaoru: "But I haven't found out why he doesn't want to go!"
Toshiya: "I'll do it. You old men can't do anything right these days."
Kaoru: "Oh, really?"
Toshiya: "Stop it! This is new! No!! Stay away! Kaoru!" He giggled.
"Excuse me!! I'm still on the phone!!" Shinya snapped. There was a bit
of giggling and a few curses but this time Toshiya answered.
"Why don't you want to go, Shin-chan?"
"I--"
"Health reasons," Manami called out.
"Hold on," Shinya told him, "Are you sure you can't hear this
conversation?" He demanded.
"Promise. I'm just guessing what they're saying."
"Health reasons? Shin-chan, are you okay?"
Kaoru: "What's wrong?"
Toshiya: "He said he's not feeling well."
"I'm fine, it's just that Manami doesn't think so."
"But family members know best, don't they?" asked Toshiya. Shinya
stared at his "family member", who only gave him a slow smile. "Shinya,
maybe you shouldn't go."
"Maybe?"
"What's wrong?"
"I--uh--"
"His nose is bleeding!!!" Manami called out again.
"Stop listening in!"
"I'm not listening in."
"Your nose is bleeding? I'm sure it'll stop." Toshiya said, cheerfully.
"Besides, Die really wants to see you there."
Kaoru: "I'm sure he'd like to him in other places, too."
Toshiya: "Kaoru, sshh! Let Die tell him!"
"Seriously, I don't think--"
"Okay, if you're really certain you don't want to go." Toshiya sounded
like he was pouting. Shinya was glad he couldn't see his face. He must've
learned that trick from Kyo, he thought. "Die'll be so disappointed,
though."
Shinya said his goodbyes and hung up the phone. Then it rang again.
"Moshi moshi?"
"Busy morning, isn't it?" Manami asked.
"Shinya, you're not coming?"
"Kyo? Who told you?"
"Kaoru called me on his mobile phone while Toshiya was on the phone with
you." Shinya sighed. If he ever needed a rumor spread, all he had to do
was call Toshiya and Kaoru. "Please say you'll go. I don't want to be
alone by myself!"
"You won't be alone! You've got those three!"
"Oh, sure. Toshiya and Kaoru will ignore me and cuddle up like they
usually do and Die'll brood and mourn all over you. It's a surprise that he
hasn't called you yet."
"He's probably on the phone with Kaoru right now." Shinya said.
"Please promise you'll go, Shinya. Promise that you'll spend time with
me! I don't want to be alone with them!!"
Heart strings suitably tugged, the drummer sighed. "Alright, I promise."
"Arigato gozaimasu, Shin-chan!! I'll never forget this!!" Kyo said,
with relief.
Shinya hung up the phone and was about to site and finish his breakfast
until the phone rang again. He swore inelegantly and Manami laughed.
"Moshi moshi?" No matter how irritated he got sometimes, he was still
polite.
"You're not going?" Die's voice sounded hurt.
Shinya wanted to kick something. "Hold on." He turned to Manami. "Take
this down," he told her and she scrambled for a paper and a pen. "If
something embarassing ever happens to me, remind me not to call Kaoru and
Toshiya." She scribbled it down furiously and he said, into the phone, "I'm
going."
"Then why did Kaoru say--?"
"Kyo changed my mind. I promised to keep him company. I couldn't leave
him in the company of such crude men like the three of you." He teased.
"Oh." There was that strange note in his voice again.
"Die, is there something wrong?"
"No. But can you promise me something?"
"Ano. . ." Shinya hesitated, "That depends on what it is."
"It isn't much, really."
"Okay, what is it?"
"I know you promised Kyo that you'd go for him."
"Hai?"
"But can you promise to spend time with me? I need to talk to you about
something."
"Ano. . ."
"I know it sounds wierd but--"
Shinya felt himself blush, "Alone with you?"
"Yes. Can you promise to spend some time alone with me? I won't hurt
you or make fun of you or anything."
"Okay. I promise."
"Arigato, Shin-chan. We'll pick you up tomorrow. Be ready at 7:00 am.
Ja ne!" Die hung up the phone.
Manami smiled at him, "Ready to complete your assignment? Two promises.
Can you handle that?"
Shinya sat down heavily. "I--oh, no. Which was the most important one?
I have to spend time with both of them!!"
"I don't know, sweetie." But the look on Manami's face told him that she
knew and wasn't going to tell him, "You have to find out about that for
yourself."
*******
"Are you coming?" Shinya asked her hopefully.
She sat watching television and looked up at him, "Somebody has to stay
here and look after Puppy."
"Demo--"
"Worried?"
"Sukoshi."
"Daijyobu ne, Shin-chan? If you're in trouble, I'll know and come for
you."
"Are you sure? It is pretty far away--and uh--you don't have a car."
"I'm an angel. I think I should know what I'm doing. Now, relax and get
this over with, would you?" A knock came at the door. "They're here.
Behave yourself and if you ever need me, just scream in terror."
Shinya sighed, as he opened the door. "Thanks, that helps me a lot." He
grabbed his bags and followed Toshiya out to the car.
"It should," Manami said as the door closed. "So, Puppy, do you think he
can take care of himself?" The dog barked, "No. I didn't think so either."
*******
Shinya sat in the backseat between Die and Kyo. Kyo was asleep and Die
was avoiding Shinya's gaze. Now, what's wrong with this picture? Shinya
asked himself.
"How long are we going to stay there?" Shinya asked.
"Until Saturday." Kaoru said, "Why? Afraid Manami'll wreck your
apartment?"
"No." It's not that, Shinya finished the sentence in his head. He shook
his head. Why was worrying? Manami probably was lying and was an obsessed
fan, who squeezed her way into his apartment. But if that was the case, why
hadn't he kicked her out yet? And why did Puppy trust her so much? She
couldn't be an angel but--she had been right about everything so far. She
certainly didn't glow, have a halo, or have any wings. And she looked
pretty solid--not ethereal. And if she was an obsessed fan, she woudn't be
obsessed with him. She looked almost like die, so she'd be a fan of his
if--Shinya shook his head, again. He was thinking too much. "Whatever. .
.."
"Nani? Shin-chan? What did you say?" Toshiya asked. They were at a
stoplight and all of Dir en Grey was looking at him. Die was the first to
look away.
"Nani?"
"Kyo woke when Kaoru mentioned Manami's name and he was asking you about
her. I think he's in love." Toshiya said, with a sly smile at the petite
singer, who only avoided his gaze.
"Sumimasen, Kyo-chan, what did you say?" Shinya asked, embarassed.
"Another one who's a million miles away," Kaoru observed, through the
rear view mirror.
"I asked if you asked her if she wanted to come." Kyo sulked
"Oh, I did. And she said that someone had to watch Puppy." Shinya said,
absently as he stared at Die, who was the other one to be a million miles
away. Die noticed Shinya's gaze and turned. Shinya smiled, "Die, what's
wrong?"
"I'll be fine," he said, gave shinya a smile that the drummer had never
seen before and turned back to stare out the window.
"Don't ignore me, Shinya!" Kyo said, impatiently, "Did you try to
convince her otherwise?"
"Yes." He replied, slightly dazzled from that smile. Kyo gave a sigh of
frustration.
"Nevermind. I'll ask you later, when you're not so distracted." Kyo
fell asleep again and Shinya blushed.
******
Thursday
"You," Shinya said, pointing at his disheveled self in the mirror, "are
an idiot."
"I'll second that," came a familiar voice. Shinya whirled to see Manami
leaning against the wall. "Good God, Shin-chan, you look like shit!"
"Thanks," he said as he sat down on the futon. "Why are you here? I
thought you were taking care of Puppy." She sat next to him.
"I was. But I gave him to your parents when I heard your scream of
terror."
"I don't remember any--oh," Shinya rolled his eyes. "You probably heard
the one where Kyo threw me in the pool."
Manami shrugged then she turned serious. "Something tells me that you've
been trying to keep both promises." She shook her head when she saw his
guilty face, "Shinya! Haven't you decided which was the more important
one?"
"But all promises are important!" he said, defensively.
"True but you shouldn't make promises you can't keep!!"
"What makes you think I can't keep them? I never break a promise!! Why
is Heaven sending me this assignment? I can keep promises!!"
Manami snarled, "You don't get it, do you? Heaven isn't sending you this
assignment because you can't keep promises, it's sending you this assignment
because it wants to know if you can promise only when you mean it!! Do you
get it?"
"but Kyo and die are both very important to me!"
"And that's why you are where you are!!" Manami replied with an
exasperated tone. She stood then knelt in front of him and took his hands,
"Shinya, you've been wearing yourself to a thread, trying to spend time with
those guys!! If you don't die by 5 p.m. tomorrow, you just might do it
today. What's going on?"
He shut his eyes tight and admitted, "I promised to be with Kyo and I
proised to be with Die. Every time Die wants to be with me and tries to
tell me what he wanted to tell me, Kyo interrupts and drags me off
somewhere. This upsets Die and then I feel guilty, and then Kyo knows and
then he gets upset when I try to apologize to Die and whenever I try to
spend some time with Kyo--Die comes along and drags me off and Kyo gets
upset and then I feel guilty!! It's just a big chain and I can't do this
anymore, Manami!!" His voice rose to a tired shriek.
"You must be really tired. You spoke more to me in this time, than you
did this past weekend. C'mon, take it easy. Do you know what Die wants to
tell you?"
"I have an idea."
"Then isn't that the more important promise?"
"Nani?' Shinya asked, helplessly.
"Kyo doesn't want to be alone. so, he's trying to be a pest to Die. But
Die has something very important to tell you and you know it. you can see
it in his eyes. he knows you know by the way you blush but he just wants to
telly ou to make sure."
"But all promises are important."
"Yes."
"But this one means a lot to Die, doesn't it?"
"Yes."
"Ano--"
"I was like you once." Manami said with a strange look in her eyes. "I
used to think the same way you did." Shinya looked up at her, confused.
"Except that I didn't have help and--well, nevermind." She pulled him to
his feet. "Now, go and do what you promised to do or I swear to God, I'll
kill you myself."
"What about Kyo?"
"I'll handle that."
*******
Friday
"Well, did you do it?" Manami asked.
"No."
"What's with you and waiting to the last minute? Are you trying to make
me nervous?"
They stood out on the balcony, in the lobby of the inn where Dir en Grey
was staying. They stared at the scenery and finally, Shinya answered. "I
can't find him."
"NANI?!! Why didn'tyou tell me ealier?"
"I didn't want to scare you!"
"It's a little too late for that, my little drummer boy!" Manami
snapped. "Did you ask around?"
"I've been asking all day!! I looked everywhere! Even the hot springs!
Even his room." Shinya sounded so depressed that Manami couldn't be upset
any longer. "Am I going to die, Manami? Is this how it ends?"
"Don't be ridiculous." Manami looked at her watch, "You've got 2 hours
to go and last time you pulled it off. C'mon. If you told me ealier, we
would've found him by now. We'll split up. Bring your phone. If I find
him, I'll call you."
*******
Shinya ran up and down the streets, looking for Die. He even went back
just in case he might've missed a spot. he once ran into Toshiya and Kaoru,
who had been shopping and wished him luck. They hadn't seen Die, either.
Kyo was sleeping back at the inn so no one worried about him. Shinya even
checked if Die was sleeping with Kyo.
He stopped at a street corner, breathless, and looked at his watch. he
had thirty minutes left. He groaned and began running again. At this rate,
he would never find the guitarist. Then I'll die, he thought, and I'll
never really know if he really loves me or not. And I'll never know what
it's like to be held by him, to be kissed by him, to feel him--the thought
ended when he crashed into someone else. They both fell to the ground, in
pain.
"Gomenasai," they both said at the same time. Shinya looked up and saw
Yukito.
"You look familiar." Shinya said.
"Well, I'm sort of famous. I'm Yukito from the band Raphael. You're
Shinya from Dir en Grey, aren't you?" The young bassist asked. he held a
hand to his head as Shinya helped him up.
"Yes."
"You must be really in a hurry! Are you late for dinner or something?"
"What do you mean?"
"Well, the only time I ever rush like that is when I'm late coming home.
My wife doesn't like that." (The only reason why Yukito is safe from any
Yaoi fics)
Shinya stared at the young boy. "You're married? you look too young to
be--"
Yukito shrugged, "It happens. Look, sorry, for that crash. Um--do you
need any help?"
"I need a faster way to find Die."
Yukito thought. "Ano--I guess a taxi is out of the question. It makes
more stops than usual when you're in ahurry." He took of his backpack
(hell, I don't even know if Yukitosama even uses a backpack, but now he
does!) and pulled out something board like with wheels, folded into a
square. "a fan gave this to me because she knew I liked skateboarding.
She's really brilliant, she made a folding one so that you wouldn't have to
carry it around and hit unsuspecting people with it. Here. Use it." He
placed it in Shinya's hands.
Shinya stared at it. "Demo--how am I supposed to give it back to you?"
"Send it by mail to the record company?" Yukito shrugged. "If not, I'll
find you somehow and claim it back." A taxi stopped in front of him.
"Ganbare, Shinyasama. Ja ne!!" He called as he climbed in.
Shinya stared at the contraption in his hands and unfolded it. I don't
really know how to use a skateboard, he admitted to himself, but, I guess
now is a good time to learn. He glanced at his watch. "Ack! Only 20
minutes left!"
******
Die stood in the parking lot of the inn, with a frown on his face. Everyone
claimed that they had seen Shinya, but the guitarist hadn't seen so much as
a lock of hair fromhim. Whenever he asked someone, they would say, "Yeah,
he was just in here, looking for you!"
He smiled to himself. At least, Shinya was trying to keep his promise.
No one mentioned Kyo once! So where was he?
Die stood in the parking lot because he was aware of the fact that you
could only get into the inn by going through the main entrance and that was
guarded by the parking lot. He stared at his watch. 4:50. Shinya was
going to be late for dinner.
"There you are!!" Came a voice, gasping. Die turned and saw Manami
leaning against one of the cars, dark red hair a mess from running around.
"Hi, Manami. Were you looking for me?"
"Hai," she replied, wearily.
"Dooshite?"
"For Shinya."
"Huh? Was he looking for me that desperately?" Die couldn't help but
feel pleased.
Manami rolled her eyes at his face of utter bliss and replied, "You could
say it was matter of life and death." She shook her head, "I have to stop
thinking in the past tense. He's not dead, yet. I mean, it IS a matter of
life and death. You're not going anywhere, are you?" She asked him.
He shook his head, "I was going to wait here for him."
"Good, because I'm tired of chasing people around. Can I use your
phone?" Die handed it over as Manami dialed Shinya's mobile up.
"Moshi moshi?" Die heard a slightly panicky voice from the other side.
"Where are you? You've got--" Manami looked at her watch, "Nine minutes
to live!! Please tell me that you're hauling your ass as fast as you
can!!!"
"Did you find him?"
Manami handed the phone to Die, "Answer him for me, will you?"
"Hi, Shin-chan."
"Die? Oh, God, Die where are you?" Die smiled to hear the relief in
Shinya's voice.
"I'm in the parking lot of the inn. What's Manami talking about you
having nine minutes to live?'
Before Shinya could answer, Manami snatched the phone away from him.
"Quick! No time for chit-chat! Get here, now!!" She hung up the phone and
Die stared at her the same way Shinya stared at her when she first told him
that she was an angel. She sighed. "I really wish people would stop
staring at me like that."
******
(Matrim cues the song Oh! Heaven as Shinya whizzes down a street on Yukito's
skateboard)
Shinya steered the skateboard wrecklessly down the street, narrowly avoiding
cars. It was a good thing that the way back to the inn was downhill. he
wouldn't be so tired when he gothere.
Down at the end of the street, stood two tiny figures in a parking lot.
Both with red and one shorter than the other. He looked at his watch.
Little did he know that Manami did the same.
"Five more minutes!!" They both screamed.
Meanwhile, a speeding car turned down the street that Shinya was on.
Strangely, it looked like the same car that Kaoru had been driving. How
this is relevant will be revealed soon enough.
Die saw him first. He didn't believe that it was really Shinya on a
skateboard but stranger things have happened before and he wasn't about to
question it. He ran to meet him up the street, Manami trailing behind him.
She hated running.
Shinya smiled to see Die running toward him. He waved and continued to
coast down the hill. Then he ralized he didn't really know how to stop a
skateboard.
Die noticed something change in Shinya's appearance and knew what it was.
He ran forward and as they met, he swept the frail drummer off the board.
The board continued coastin gdown the hill and hit Manami in the shin. She
swore like an angel shouldn't be able to.
They stood there, frozen in time and Manami wished that she had a camera.
They really made a nice couple. Die held Shinya in his arms, staring
intently in his eyes. "I heard you were looking for me?"
Shinya smiled up at Die, "Arigato gozaimasu, Die, for saving me. Again.
Did you want to tell me something?"
"You want me to tell you now? In the middle of the street?"
"I promised to spend some time with you. I hope you don't mind if it's
in the middle of the street." Shinya admitted sheepishly. Die smiled as
the drummer went on, "You don't even have to say it out loud. You can
whisper it in my ear if you like."
Die smiled. He couldn't believe this was Shinya speaking. But
still--here was his chance. He whispered, "Aishiteru, Shin-chan.
Aishiteru." Shinya smiled and it was like the sun coming out from behind a
dark cloud. He buried his head in Die's should and sighed with relief.
"CUT!!" Manami yelled out and Shinya raised his head, grinning, to look
at the angel. She looked at her watch. "And since you were standing there,
gazing at each other for a very long time, you still had twenty seconds
left!! Good job, Shin-chan!"
"Shinya, what is she talking about?" Die asked.
"Die--"
Shinya never go to finish what he was about to say because suddenly,
Kaoru's car came speeding down the street. Manami gasped, "Oh, my God!!
Shinya! Die!"
"Shinya!"
"I don't want to die!!"
Die whirled to block Shinya from the car as it skidded to a halt, five
inches away from them. Everyone froze. Manamic recovered first and got to
the couple. "Shinya--Die--are you okay?"
Die was now carrying Shinya like they were about to have a honeymoon.
Shinya looked like he had fainted. Then he said, weakly, and without
opening his eyes, "Am I dead? Am I in heaven?"
"Not unless you call being in Die's arms, heaven." Manami laughed, "And
I have to tell you, heaven isn't quite that nice."
Toshiya and Kaoru scrambled out of the car, "Daijyobuka?"
"Yeah," Die snapped, "No thanks to you!! We could've died!!"
"But we didn't," Shinya said weakly, "Manami's an angel. She wouldn't
have let us die."
"Hush, brat." She began to speak to Shinya. "Hey, this has been pretty
good for a second assignment, if you keep this up, we--" She stopped as
soon as she saw that Shinya wasn't listening to her.
He was too busy kissing Die.
She chuckled, "Well, c'mon, guys. We'd better go back before Kyo wakes
up and wonders why no one's joined him for dinner."
