Part 2(a)

*************

Monday, July 24 7:00 am

Kaoru stared at the pancake mix box, glumly. Why had he ever agreed to
this? He chewed on his lip, grabbed the box and shuffled to the bedroom.
Toshiya lay asleep on the bed, his lips curved in a slight smile. Kaoru
nodded. This was why he agreed to this. He strode back to the kitchen with
renewed determination. “I’ll make breakfast for him!! For once, I’ll do
something right!” He gathered the necessary ingredients and took out some
utensils. He took Toshiya’s blue apron off the hook and put it on (hoping
that Toshiya would not wake up and see him like this.) “Alright.” Kaoru
read off the ingredients and pointed at each one to see if he got them all.
“Uh-‘kay…eggs, milk-add one half-“ He muttered as he mixed the pancake mix
and eggs and milk together.
    “Kaoru-chan!!”
Kaoru jumped, almost spilling the pancake batter as hide walked in the
kitchen. Kaoru gasped and tried to regain his breath. “Don’t do that!!
You almost made me spill the-“
“What are you doing?” hide looked over his shoulder, “What is that?”
Kaoru waved the pancake box at him and hide took it. “I’m trying to
make breakfast for Toshiya.”
    “You? Make breakfast?”
    “What’s wrong with that?”
“Nothing. But you really ought to rethink that apron choice.” Kaoru
looked down. It was baby blue with tiny pink butterflies on it. He sighed
and hide smirked. “Anyways, you need any help?”
     “No thankyou.”
“Is that it? Is that all you’re going to cook for him?”
Kaoru hugged the bowl with his left arm and mixed it furiously with the
right. “What’s wrong with pancakes?”
hide’s lips made a straight line as he went over to a cupboard, “Have
you no romantic bone in your body?! Pancakes!! Ha! Just pancakes!!” He
pulled out another pan and placed it on the stove. He opened a few more
until he found what he was looking for and took out a tray. “You know, if I
tried to get away with JUST pancakes with my koi, I wouldn’t be allowed near
them for months!” He scolded and Kaoru snorted.
“What are you doing?” Kaoru suddenly asked.
“Helping you make breakfast for your koi!” hide returned and took out
some eggs and bacon from the refridgerator.
“Eh? No!! I want to do this by myself!”
“Not everyone can do things by themselves, Kaoru-chan!” hide said
seriously and turned on the stove. “Now, hush, or Toshiya’ll wake up and
the surprise’ll be ruined. Do you have another apron somewhere?” Kaoru
pointed in the general direction of a linen closet and soon hide was wearing
a light pink apron with white bunnies on it. Kaoru tried not to laugh.
“Ne, Kaoru, is this your apron?”
Kaoru sputtered, “My apron?!! Of course not!! I don’t cook!”
hide smirked again, “Obviously not.” He wiped Kaoru’s nose. “Stop
mixing that thing like you want to kill it.”

--a few minutes later-

Kaoru grimaced and wiped his forehead, leaving some flour behind. hide
gave an unsure smile. “It’s not as bad as it looks. It’s only burnt a
little…on the top. Don’t worry…”
    “I don’t know.”
“It’s presentation that counts.” hide placed the plate of pancakes on
the tray. Kaoru handed him a small bowl with butter in it and a small glass
bottle of syrup. hide placed it on the tray and stared at it, then moved it
a tiny bit to the left. Kaoru gave him the eggs and bacon and hide placed
it next to the pancakes. They stared at it for a second.
“I don’t know. Do you think he’ll like breakfast without rice?” Kaoru
worried.
“It smells pretty good. If he doesn’t want it, I’ll eat it.” Kaoru
glared at him. “I’m only kidding!!”
     “There’s something missing…”
“Ah!” hide grabbed a small vase from under the sink, filled it with
water and peered around the kitchen and dining room. “Do you have a rose or
a flower somewhere?”
Kaoru looked down embarrassedly and went outside to the small balcony.
He came back with two daisies and placed it in the vase.
“You grew these?” hide asked and Kaoru nodded. “Wow…hmm. Say, why are
you making breakfast for Toshiya?”
Kaoru poured some orange juice in a glass and placed it on the tray.
“Ano…Shinya said that I would going through hell for the next couple of
months and I’d probably put Toshiya through hell as well,” Kaoru replied,
remembering Die’s stressful state, “So, I’m trying to make it as nice as
possible as I can for him. It’s bad enough that I am who I am but it’ll
probably be worse now.”
hide nodded then clapped his hands together, “Yosh! Now, are we going
to surprise him or not?”
Kaoru nodded as they both crept into the bedroom. Toshiya was now
sprawled across the bed, one arm flung carelessly over his eyes. Kaoru
placed the tray on the night table, sat on Toshiya’s side of the bed and
tried to wake the bassist. “Totchi.”
     “Mmn?”
     “Wake up.”
“Sleepy, ne, Kaoru?” Toshiya said, and yawned prettily.
“But I made breakfast for you…”
     “But you can’t cook Kaoru.”
“Yes, I can!!” Toshiya giggled and opened his eyes. He saw Kaoru in
his apron and the breakfast tray on the table. “Oh, my God, Kaoru-you did
make breakfast.” Toshiya’s voice was full of wonder.
“hide helped,” Kaoru said, softly. He looked over his shoulder at the
angel who was gone.
“But you still cooked breakfast for me! Ah, Kaoru-yasashii na!”
Toshiya wrapped his arms around Kaoru’s neck and kissed his cheek. Kaoru
blushed with pleasure.
“I burnt the pancakes a little…” Kaoru said, sheepishly, and moved
the tray onto Toshiya’s lap.
Toshiya smiled his kawaii crooked smile. “I don’t care. This is the
only time I get to see you in that apron!”
Kaoru scowled and began to hastily undo the ties of the apron.
“No!” Toshiya grabbed Kaoru’s shoulders. “Keep it on!” He winked.
“You look kind of sexy.” Kaoru blushed again and Toshiya began to eat
breakfast.
hide walked in and Toshiya almost choked. Hide didn’t notice,
“Message for Kaoru of Dir en Grey! Ohaiyo, Toshiya-kun!”
Toshiya swallowed and began to laugh. “Ohaiyo, hide-sama!”
hide handed the message to Kaoru with a curious look. “It’s the
apron.” Kaoru told him.
The angel/guitarist smirked at Toshiya then smoothed down his apron.
“Ne, Toshiya-kun, don’t I look pretty?”
      Toshiya continued to laugh.
“By Friday, July 28, Kaoru must learn to follow or he will die at 3:00
pm.” Kaoru read out loud. He looked up at hide, who was fussing over the
apron.
“It’d be better if there weren’t any bunnies on it,” hide told
Toshiya, who shrugged and continued to eat.
       “hide-sama?”
       “Hai?
“Nani kore?” Kaoru waved the paper around.
“Exactly what it means.” hide replied. “You must-“
The phone rang at that moment. Kaoru picked up the phone. “Moshi
moshi?”
“Santa got into a bike accident. Get to the office immediately!”
“K’so!” Kaoru swore and Toshiya jumped. He placed the phone down.
“Toshiya! Eat and get ready! Hayaku!”
      “Nani?”
“Santa got into a bike accident.”
“Santa? K’so!” Toshiya swore, grabbed the tray and ran to the
kitchen.
“Santa?” hide stood there confused. “Santa wa dare desu ka?”
Kaoru didn’t respond. “Ah, crap! My car’s in the shop!” He dialed a
number. “Shinya? We need a ride! Yes, I know he got into a bike accident!
Hai. Arigato!” Toshiya ran back in, the rest of his breakfast in a
lunchbox. He got dressed in ten seconds-leather pants, blue shirt-his
makeup was on in a quick minute. Kaoru opted for shades.
       hide tried again. “Who’s Santa?”
       “Yoshiki.”
       hide blinked.
A few minutes later, the doorbell rang. Toshiya opened the door, put
his shoes on and was out. Kaoru began to do the same until Die began
laughing. “Nani?”
Toshiya’s eyes widened and he kicked Die. “Kaoru! Your-my apron!”
Kaoru growled and began to struggle with the apron. “Dammit…”
“Take it easy there, Kaoru-chan, I got it.” hide was there in an
instant, releasing Kaoru from his confines.
       “Arigato! Ikamassho!”

--In the band’s van-

“How’d the hell did this happen?” Kyo demanded.
“He rode into a tree,” Shinya replied, absently.
        “No, I mean-“
“He was riding with Shizuka and he-“ Shinya paused then finished
lamely, “Rode into a tree.”
“What does he need us for?” Die asked.
“To cover for his people.” Kaoru replied.
        “What happened to his people?”
“He fired them,” Kaoru said, calmly.
        “Nani?!”
“You know how he is,” hide replied, “He overreacts, he’s prideful-“
“hide-sama,” Kaoru said, noticing Shinya’s sharp stare in the rear
view mirror.
Toshiya sighed, “What do we tell the press? They’ll want a
statement from him.”
“He hopes to never do it again,” Shinya said.
“It’s going to be a field day for the press,” hide smiled.
“hide-sama,” Shinya said, “Please don’t talk about him like
that.”
“Face it, Shinya, your idol’s a geek,” hide returned. Kaoru
winced. If hide wasn’t already an angel, Shinya would-
But instead, Shinya only sighed, “Yes, I know but could you not say
that around me?”
hide began to light up a cigarette. Kaoru snatched it away and
threw it out the window, just as Shinya’s eyes narrowed. That would’ve
meant certain death-angel or no angel. hide scowled then said, “Hey, I only
call it as I see it.”
Shinya sighed again and turned down a street, “Consistency of
respect, hide-sama. Consistency of respect. If it doesn’t start here, then
no one would have it for him anywhere.”
         hide nodded.
“Speaking of respect,” Kyo said, slowly. “You sure Kaoru can
respect you with what you’re wearing?”
hide frowned, “Do you have a problem with my apron, Kyo-kun?”
Kyo barely smothered a wicked grin. “Iie, hide-sama. It just
looks out of place, you know.”
“Yeah,” Die said, the laughter apparent in his voice, “Pastel pink
apron-white bunnies. Leather pants, bright green shirt, pink shades-“
         “Bright pink hair,” Toshiya added.
Die, Kaoru, Toshiya and Kyo chuckled.
“You look like my Mom’s worse nightmare,” Die managed and even
Shinya began to laugh.
“What’s wrong with it? Manami wore something like this and she
looked fine.”
“Iie. Perfect in fact.” Kyo replied.
“Are you sure you’re not biased? You are in love with her after
all.”
       “Of course not-“
“Besides,” Toshiya said, “She had that kawaii handkerchief on her
head.”
Die giggled, “She was still an insult to the mothers everywhere.”
Kyo scowled and punched him on the arm.
“Itai! Kyo! I was only kidding!”
“Be nice to your guardian angel, before she finds a reason not to
guard you!”
Shinya smiled, “Consistency of respect, Die-chan.”
“If she is my guardian angel, why isn’t she protecting me now?”
“Because,” Kyo aimed another punch at Die, “She’s teaching you a
lesson!”
“In what?” Toshiya asked, mischief in his eyes.
“Insult her and know the wrath of her boyfriend!!” Kaoru answered and
Die began laughing so hard that his eyes teared. Kyo gave Die another good
punch.
They stopped in the parking lot and got out of the car. Shinya locked
in and they began to walk into the building. Kaoru frowned. “Wait a
minute. hide, aren’t you supposed to not be seen by Yoshiki or by anyone
you personally knew in your last life?”
      hide’s eyes widened, “Oh, crap! Kaoru-chan, you’re right! You’ll
have to go this alone!” He disappeared with a puff of pink smoke and Shinya
began to cough.
       “Must he always do that?
“It seems there’s no other way he can!”
“Manami never did that,” Shinya complained.
“Manami’s not dramatic.” Kaoru reminded him.
“But still-tell him that smoking is forbidden around me. Pink smoke
or no pink smoke. Angel or no angel.” Shinya said.
“Mou, Shin-chan! You have to ruin everyone’s fun.” Kyo pouted and
Shinya snorted.
“Sure if you call slowly killing yourself fun,” he crossed his arms
and began to walk down the hall sulkily. Die winked at Kyo and ran after
him.
“Shin-chan!! Don’t be so cruel!” Die wrapped his arms around
Shinya, who made a short sound of surprise and then began screaming when Die
picked him up. “Everyone can’t be as healthy as you!!”
“Put me down, you freak!” Shinya half-shouted and laughed.
“Tasukete, tasukete!! A mean red-haired freak is hurting me!!”
A few people trailed in after they entered the building but the
members of Dir en Grey took no notice. They only focused in on their
drummer and guitarist. Toshiya laughed. “I’ll save you, Shin-chan!!” and
ran towards the couple.
“Totchi! My substitute guardian angel! I knew I could count on
you!!”
Die lifted Shinya over his shoulder. “Don’t think I’ll give him up so
easily, angel boy!!” Shinya kicked his heels for theatrics sake. Kaoru
shook his head. Sometimes, he could not believe he was in this band.
Toshiya reached out for Shinya’s hands and began to pull him off of
Die’s shoulders. Shinya was half-way before Die held onto his waist.
Toshiya grunted and began to pull harder. Shinya made another strange noise
of discomfort and Die only grinned and held on. “Too bad you’re not wearing
a skirt, Shin-chan!”
Shinya’s eyes widened with shock and began to squirm a little more.
“Get away, you hentai freak!! Pull harder, Totchi!!”
Toshiya did so, managing to pull most of Shinya into his arms.
“Back off, angel boy, you’ve got a koi!!” Die yelled and tried to
pull Shinya back
Kyo and a bunch of other people were laughing so hard and that only
seemed to add fuel to the fire.
Kaoru couldn’t take this any longer. His face red and a vein popping
out of his forehead which made Kyo jump, he yelled out, “You three!!” They
froze, Shinya’s chin in Toshiya’s hand. “ Knock it off!! Die put Shinya
down! Toshiya, you do the same and don’t you dare kiss him!! Shinya, get
away from those two!! And Kyo!!”
“Nani?!” the vocalist asked confused. “Why are you yelling at me?!”
“Stop laughing!! It only encourages Die!!”
“Ne, Totchi-the old man could use a break. Weren’t you supposed to
show him how to lighten up?” Die teased. Kaoru rolled his eyes.
“I’m not saying anything. Besides, he cooked me breakfast.”
A strange giggle interrupted their thoughts and Kaoru turned his
attention to Kyo. “What was that?”
Kyo glared back at him over the rim of his sunglasses, “It wasn’t
me!!”
All five members of Dir en Grey turned to stare at one blue-haired boy
and another cute faced blonde. They sat on the floor, laughing hysterically
as they leaned against the wall and each other in order not to lie on the
floor laughing.
“What do we have here?” Kyo asked, dryly. Kaoru ignored him. “What
shall we do with them, fearless leader?”
      “What are they?” Die asked.
“Who are they?” Toshiya and Shinya corrected him gently. Die
shrugged.
      “Whatever.”
Kyo knelt and peered at the two people whose laughter was only now
fading away. “Hmm…looks like….”
Toshiya knelt next to him and peered at one then at the other. The
one with the blue hair blushed while the cute faced one stuck his tongue out
at them. Kyo scowled. “You call that sticking out your tongue?”
“Kyo-don’t.” Kaoru warned. Kyo only sighed and continued to stare at
the two.
      “Hey…I know you…”
“It’s about time,” one answered back.
The blue-haired one hit him. “Be nice!”
“Why should I? Cutie here isn’t!”
“I am not cute!!” Kyo snapped and was about to do some damage until a
firm hand held him back.
“Can’t I trust the four of you to just take care of yourselves for one
day? Just one day?!” Kyo turned around and glomped Manami. She continued
as if he hadn’t done so, “I ask for a simple vacation for one week-iie, two
and all I get is four days of relative peace, three days of worrying, and
then two days of near death experiences and one day of this! The rest was
making sure that Kyo did not burn down the house and then it was over-“ she
stopped her rant and sighed. “There is not enough money in the world that
would make me--"
Die, Toshiya, Shinya and Kaoru gave Kyo a look and he smiled.
"--take another day of this. Thank God, I don't have Kaoru to look
after and speaking of which, Kaoru, where--" Kyo kissed Manami on the lips,
silencing the rest of what she was about to say. Manami made a sound of
anger and looked like she was about to push him away but didn't. Everyone
in the wall began to chuckle. After a few more seconds, Manami pushed him
away, "Thankyou for that but I need to breathe!" She tugged on her braid.
"Now, can I trust you four to behave yourselves?"
       "Yes, okaasan--" Die said, meekly.
Manami glared at him, "Oh? I thought I was an insult to mothers
everywhere?"
       "I was only kidding!"
"You can trust us, Manami-sama. We'll behave." Shinya said and
Manami smiled.
       "Okay, then."
"Where are you going?" Kyo asked, clutching Manami's hand.
       "Vacation."
       "But--"
       "But what?"
He stared at the two on the ground then whispered frantically in her
ear. He looked at Kaoru then she nodded. The other members of Dir en Grey
huddled around them.
"What'd you tell her?" Kaoru asked.
"Is that true, Kaoru? Is hide not here because Yoshiki's in a bike
accident?" Manami asked. Kaoru nodded.
"Do you have any idea where he would be, Manami?"
"No. If an angel doesn't want to be found, they won't be found.
'Cept by the Metatron, who'll find anyone anywhere." She shook her head,
"And I thought he was the lucky one. He's got it worse than I thought. What
are you five doing here anyway?"
"We were supposed to help with getting Yoshiki's stuff in order."
"Then let's do that. We'll visit Yoshiki in the hospital later."
Manami replied. They broke up their huddle and as they headed to the
elevator she called over her shoulder, "Oh, and Kyo?"
       "Hai?"
"Help up those two Glay boys and tell them that Takuro's waiting.
And he ain't too happy either."
