The American Society of Lubrication Engineers was founded in 1944 to provide a forum for the exchange of ideas to solve wear and friction problems. In 1987 the society became the Society of Tribologists and Lubrication Engineers - STLE - to better reflect its scope of interests. There are over 4,000 members world-wide, most are enrolled in local sections throughout the USA, Canada, and Australia. Canadian sections are located in Edmonton, Hamilton, Montreal, Sarnia, Saskatchewan, Toronto, and Vancouver. These have a monthly dinner meeting to promote the exchange of ideas, experience and information.
In May of each year the Annual Meeting is held to bring all members and sections together for an international                event where about 1,500 come and attend to hear presentations on the latest experiences at technical sessions, to attend the various committee meetings or to attend education courses on subjects which cover the full spectrum from the basics through materials and lubricants   in many diverse applications.
The STLE publishes Tribology & Lubrication Technology, a monthly technical magazine that also updates readers on STLE activities, and a number of books including the Handbook of Lubrication and Tribology.
Joint activities include the Tribology Conference with the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, and the Fuels      and Lubricants Conference with the Society of Automotive Engineers.
