Spock's Daffodils

Caroline Nixon (Jane R)

"I wandered lonely as a cloud--" Illogical! Do clouds then feel?

(Yet, each long day, though in a crowd for me, black solitude is real.

And have they thighs, and calves, and knees,

Those flowers, to dance beneath the trees?

"Continuous as the stars that shine and twinkle on the Milky Way--"

Inaccurate! Sensors defined just fifteen billion yesterday,

And stars look white or blue, and cold,

Unlike the Daffodils', warm gold.

And when upon my couch I lie in occupied but pensive mood

I ridicule the poet's eye yet not sincerely, as I should:

Perversely coveting the chance

To see the Daffodils' wild dance.
