| | Tricks and Treats | |

Traditions - PARTIES/COSTUMES: Monica and Chandler have a last minute Halloween party and they make costumes mandatory even though no one really wants to wear one. Monica: "Come on! It’ll be fun!"

Quip - Ross: "Well, I’ll-I’ll be there. I mean I have to wear a costume to all my classes that day anyway so…" Rachel: "Please tell me you’re not gonna dress up like a dinosaur." Ross: "Not two years in a row."

Quip - Joey: "Look, Halloween is so stupid! Dressing up, pretending to be someone you’re not…" Chandler: "You’re an actor!"

Quip - Joey: "Well hey-hey if she needs any idea for costumes, she could be a bikini model, or a slutty nurse, or a sexy cheerleader huh—Ooh-ooh, Leatherface from The Texas Chainsaw Massacre—No-no-no! Slutty Leatherface."

Quip - Phoebe: "By the way, it’s a costume party." Ursula: "Oh! Okay, so that’s why you’re…" (Motions to what she’s wearing.) Phoebe: "No. But thanks."

Costumes - Monica dresses up as Catwoman. Monica: "Who do you think would win in a fight, Catwoman or Supergirl?" Joey: "Catwoman, hands down." Monica: "Yeah…" Joey: "But between you and Phoebe, I’d have to give the edge to Phoebe."

Costumes - Rachel goes as Rachel...in a stylish dress. Rachel: "I am a woman who spent a lot of money on a dress and she wants to wear it, because soon she won’t be able to fit into it." Monica: "…I’m Catwoman, who wants to borrow the dress when you’re too big for it."

Traditions - TRICK OR TREATING: During the Halloween party, Rachel takes over the handing out candy duties. She runs out of candy when she dumps the whole bowl into one girls bag so then she starts giving cash and then writes checks when she runs out of cash. When they finally get some more candy, the kids decide the money was way better. Kids: "Trick or treat!!" Rachel: " Just a minute!!! Look at you guys! Wow!"

Quip - Rachel (to the cowgirl): "And you are so in style right now. Y’know, I work at Ralph Lauren and the whole fall line has got this like equestrian theme going on. I don’t suppose you saw the cover of British Vogue, but…" Cowgirl: "Can I just have the candy?"

Costumes - Phoebe dresses up as Supergirl. Phoebe: "Ah, Catwoman. So we meet again." Monica: "So we do Supergirl." Phoebe: "No, it’s me. Phoebe!"

Costumes - Monica dresses Chandler as the Velveteen Rabbit. Kinda. Monica: "I thought he’d love it! His favorite kid's book was the Velveteen Rabbit!" Chandler: "The Velveteen Rabbit was brown and white!" Monica: "Well, it was either a pink bunny or no bunny at all." Chandler: "No bunny at all!! Always no bunny at all!!!"

Costumes - Joey dresses up as his former roomate. Monica: "You didn’t dress up either?!" Joey: "Yes I did! I’m Chandler."

Quip - Rachel: "Monica! We need more candy?" Monica: "What?! There’s only been like four kids." Rachel: "Yeah I know, but one of them just said that she loved me so I just gave her everything." Phoebe: "No wonder your pregnant."

Costumes - Ross cleverly (so he thinks) goes as Spudnik. But everyone else thinks he's something else. Ross: "Remember the Russian satellite, Sputnik? Well, I’m a potato or a…spud. And these are my antennae. So Sputnik, becomes… Spud-nik. Spudnik!" Chandler: "Wow! I don’t have the worst costume anymore!" Joey: "Hey all right, Ross came as doody." Ross: "No, I-I’m not doody." Monica: "No, space doody!"

Costumes - Ursala's fiance Eric comes as the planetary system. Eric: "Oh umm, I’m the solar system. Yeah, my students helped me make it—I teach the second grade."

Quip - Rachel: "Y’know what honey, we’re actually out of candy right now. But someone just went out to get some and I have been giving out money but I’m out of that too. Hey, can I write you a check?" Girl: "Okay!"

Costumes - Ross' date Mona dresses as a nurse. Chandler: "Joey is gonna be thrilled. He was hoping you'd com by as a slutty nurse." Mona: "Actually, I'm just a nurse." Chandler: "You'd think that would embarrass me, but you see, I'm maxed out."

Quip - Chandler: "Howdy, doody." Ross: "That’s funny. Yeah. Y’know you’re the funniest man here in a pink bunny costume his wife made him wear."

Quip - Boy in a Cape: "I’d rather have the money." Rachel: "Well, that-that’s not your choice. Happy Halloween!" Boy in a Cape: "This isn’t fair." Rachel: "Well is it fair that all you did was put on a cape and I gotta give you free stuff?"

Quip - Ross: "Hey, at least you have a wife! I-I keep getting divorces and knockin’ people up! And I’m dressed as doody." Chandler: "You’re Spudnik." Ross: "Come on, who are we kidding? I’m doody."

Quip - Rachel: "Oh, I am just awful with children." Joey: "Come on, you're good with kids. They're just crazy on Halloween. You know, they're all greedy and hopped-up on sugar." Rachel: "Really? You think that's all it is?" Joey: "Absolutely. Halloween is the worst. Except for Christmas. And their birthdays. They get a little crazy during the summer, too. And anytime they're hungry or sleepy. Yeah, kids are tough. Good luck with that."

Other costumes seen throughout the episode include - Adults: cow, cheerleader, soldier, hippie, spanish dancer, maid, skeleton, referee, flapper girl, karate guy, Elvis and a girl in pajamas. Kids: witch, clown, cowboy, ballerina, 50's girl, boy in a cape.

| | Dialogue To Die For | |

Ross: "He was hitting on her, and I got her. I guess the better man won." (To Joey) "Please don’t take her from me."

Phoebe: "Ursula!"
Ursula: "Oh."
Phoebe: "Wait! It's me, Phoebe."
Ursula: "Oh, I thought there was a mirror there. Okay, bye-bye."

Eric: "Aren’t you gonna give me a kiss?"
Phoebe: "Okay, I will. But right after you tell me who the hell you are."

Phoebe: "I love the second grade!"
Eric: "Really?"
Phoebe: "Yeah! It’s so much better than first grade when you don’t know what’s going on and definitely better than third grade. Y’know with all the politics and mind games."

Monica: "Well what would you say if I told you that, y’know, Ross or Chandler could beat you up?"
Joey: "I would say, 'Woman, please!'."

Monica: "Oh God!"
Phoebe: "Hmm?"
Monica: "Chandler’s making his sex face."

| | Pop! Goes the Culture | |

Joey: "Ooh-ooh, Leatherface from The Texas Chainsaw Massacre—No-no-no! Slutty Leatherface."
The original Texas Chainsaw Massacre was a lowbudget horror film made in 1974 by director Tobe Hopper and staring Marilyn Burns and Gunnar Hansen. it's about a family of cannibals in Texas, the son, Leatherface, kills his victims with a chainsaw. The film was inspired by serial killer Ed Gain and in 2003, Marcus Nispel directed a remake staring Andrew Bryniarski, Jessica Biel and Eric Balfour.

Rachel: "Y’know, I work at Ralph Lauren and the whole fall line has got this like equestrian theme going on."
World famous fashion designer Ralph Lauren was born Ralph Lifschitz in the Bronx, New York on October 14, 1939. after dropping out of a city college and serving 2 years in the US Army, he opened a tie business called Polo Fashions. He was able to secure a $50,000 loan from a financial backer and since then Lauren's 'fashion empire' has grown into a $5 billion dollar industry.

Rachel: "I don’t suppose you saw the cover of British Vogue, but…"
Vogue magazine is a fashion and style magazine published by Conde Nast Publications, Inc in several countries under several names. It is widely considered the most influential fashion magazine in the world. Jennifer Aniston has been on two Vogue cover's that I know of, the August 2002 issue and the January 2004 issue.

Phoebe: "Ah, Catwoman. So we meet again."
In DC Comic's Batman series, Catwoman is the sexy cat-burglar alter ego of Selina Kyle. In 2004, hot new movie version of the character emerged played by Halle Berry.

Monica: "So we do Supergirl."
Supergirl is a fiction character who was introduced in 1959 and has since become a major part of the Superman comic book series. Originally, she was said to be the last survivor of Argo City on the planet Kypton and was sent to Earth to be raised by her cousin Superman. The character has also had her own box office dud and has been featured on the television series Smallville as well as the Superman animated series and Cartoon Network's Justice League.

Monica: "His favorite kid's book was the Velveteen Rabbit!"
The Velveteen Rabbit is a classic children's story about a toy rabbit and his quest to become real through the love of his owner. The book was written by Margery Williams and was first published in 1922.

Ross: "Remember the Russian satellite, Sputnik?"
The Sputnik program was a series of unmanned space missions launched by the soviet union in the late 1950's to demonstrate the viability of artificial satellites. The name "Sputnik" means "satellite" or "fellow traveler" in Russian.

Eric: "And we were both in the Peace Corps."
The Peace Corps are an independent US federal agency designated to promote mutual understanding between Americans and the outside world. Over 168,000 Americans have enlisted since it was founded in 1961.

Chandler: "Howdy, doody."
Howdy Doody was a children's television program that aired on NBC from 1947 to 1960. The show's host was 'Buffalo Bob' played by Bob Smith who dressed in cowboy apparell, Bob was also the voice of Howdy Doody a freckle faced boy marionette. The show was extremely popular and is a fond memory for many baby boomers.

Character: Gunther's Costume - Charlie Brown
Charlie Brown is the principal character in the Peanuts comic strip by Charles M. Schultz. He is a third grade student that was inspired by Schultz' own life. Charlie possesses endless determination and stubbornness, but is ultimately dominated by his anxieties and shortcomings. He almost always is seen wearing a yellow t-shirt with a black jagged stripe around the middle.

| | Goofs, Gaffes and Nitpicks | |

When Mona arrives at the party it looks as if Rachel only says "Hey!" and smiles at her but you hear a voice over of her saying "Hi Mona!"

Phoebe is talking to her sister Ursula outside while Ursula is smoking a cigarette when Ursula's fiancee, played by Sean Penn, walks outside and Ursula throws the cigarette on the floor, stamping it out with her foot. Later, when Sean Penn's character comes back to pick up Ursula's bag, he and Phoebe walk outside and the cigarette has disappeared from the floor.

What kind of Halloween party is Monica and Chandler trying to throw if they aren't playing any music? Boring much?

| | Creep Show | |

In one of her first roles in 1993, Jennifer Aniston was in the campy horror film, Leprechaun.

Courteney Cox met her hubby, David Arquette, on the set of the first Scream film in 1996 and they both went on to star in the sequel in 1997 and the final Scream in 2000.

| | Misc Notes | |

After 10 seasons, this is the only Halloween episode Friends did even though there were 8 Thanksgiving episodes and 7 Christmas themed episodes.

In the begining of the episode, Joey is seen wearing a FDNY t-shirt at the coffee house. This was the first nod to the 9/11 tragedy that Friends made.

This episode was nominated for an Emmy Award for Outstanding Multi-Camera Picture Editing for a Series.
