Quip - Angela (Voice Over): 'When I was little I, like, worshipped Halloween. And truthfully, part of me still does. 'Cause it's your one chance all year to be someone else. ... I wanna be someone else, but to wear, like, an actual costume to school is too scary.'

Traditions - COSTUMES: All of the Chase family scrambles to find a costume last minute. Danielle: "Mom, what should I be?" Angela: "A pain in the butt, 'cause you are." Danielle: "I'd be you, but nobody can find a mask that ugly."

Quip - Patty: "Who are we gonna be?" Graham: "When we grow up?" Patty: "No, at, at Camille's costume party tonight."

Quip - Graham: "I hate Halloween. Woah! You've got something. You can wear that flapper dress." Patty: "I hate that flapper dress."

Costumes - Sharon dresses as a black cat, but no one seems to get it. Boy: "Hey, rat! Hey, rat girl!" Sharon: "I'm not a rat. I'm a cat. Hey, hands off the tail. I'm a cat, Okay? Deal with it."

Costumes - Angela's teacher Ms. Lerner is dressed as Obi-Wan Kenobi. Angela (VO): 'People are wearing costumes. Even teachers are wearing costumes. I should have worn a costume. But who would I be?'

Costumes - Rayanne dresses up as a sexy vampire chick. Rickie: "Ignore her. She got up on the wrong side of the coffin this morning."

Costumes - Rickie dresses as a normal guy. Rayanne: "Whoa! Scary costume!" Rickie: "Yeah. I got it from Brian Krakow. I thought this Halloween, I'd be everyone else."

Costumes - Rayanne brings Angela an outfit from the early 60's to wear. Rayanne: "Wait 'til you see what I brought you! They're actual. It's not a costume. They're, like, real." Rickie: "Oh, look, mohair!"

Quip - Rayanne: "Somebody's got to do something. Halloween bites this year. We've got to find Tino. Tino is, like, Mr. Halloween."

Quip - Sharon: "Oh, good you're wearing a costume. 'Cause if more people don't start wearing costumes, they're going to be, like, discontinued."

Traditions - URBAN LEGENDS: In the bathroom, the girls (and Rickie) talk about a local Liberty High School legend about a boy who died at the school years ago. Rayanne: "It was, like, after this Halloween dance. He and his friends decided to paint the gym black, just to do it? And, um, he was, like, up in the rafters. And some moron girl leaves her spike heel right in the middle of the floor, don't ask me why. And, so, when he fell, this humongous spike, like, stabbed him right in the nostril." Rickie: "That's not how I heard about it. I heard he was trying to hang this banner that, like, declared his love for this girl." Sharon: "He and my uncle's friend were, like, in the same class. And my uncle said the night he dies, there was this storm and the electricity went out. And the next day, they found out the electricity went out at the exact same time that Nicky died."

Costumes - Patty's last minute costume rental is Rapunzel. Patty: "What's so funny?" Graham: "You as Rapunzel. Well, I mean... Come on... Not that... Well, you know..."

Costumes - Graham's last minute rental is a pirate costume. Graham: "Um, actually, I don't see myself in tights."

Traditions - SEANCE: Rayanne makes plans with Tino to try to communicate with the spirit of Nicky Driscoll. Rayanne: "I've really got something going here. I told Tino about your book, so we are going to meet here, tonight, outside the school, at, like, 9:00, 'cause it's a witchy number, and we are going to contact the spirit of Nicky Driscoll. Finally! It's Halloween!" (Runs off howling)

Traditions - PUMPKINS: There are carved pumpkins that can be seen in a few scenes at the Chase house and Graham takes advantage of one of their many other uses. Graham: "I decided to make pumpkin soup. We can freeze it."

Costumes - Danielle decides to dress up like her big sister. Danielle (impersonating Angela): "Mom, Sharon Cherski and I exist in, like, two different worlds, okay? I can't just hand her a dish, okay? I mean it's just not that simple. (Back to herself) I'm doing Angela. Pretty good, huh?"

Quip - Graham: "Your mother and I have to go change into our idiotic Halloween costumes now."

Traditions - TRICK OR TREATING: Patty and Graham attempt to hand out candy at their door but get distracted. Meanwhile, Sharon and Danielle decided to go house to house getting goodies. Sharon: "Oh. Trick-or-treating, huh?" Danielle: "Yeah, there's this house on Rossmore, and they made it like a haunted house. And then on Courtney's street, they give really good candy. "

Traditions - PRANKS: When their seance plans go down the drain, Rayanne has a new plan with mischief in mind. Rayanne: "It's Halloween! I say, I say, we break into the school and write "Nicky Driscoll was here" on the gym floor in red lipstick." Rickie: "That is such a terrible idea." Rayanne: "Come on! We'll be legendary! They won't forget us. We'l be like, like Nicky!"

Spooks - Ghosts: Angela finds herself experiencing things that happened in 1963 and talks to the ghost of a boy who died in her school 30 years ago.

Traditions - PRANKS: Jordan and his buddies trash the football feild and plan to find the person who egged Tino's car for some revenge. Jordan: "Every year we come out here, tear up the track, and throw garbage cans over. God, it's getting old."

Traditions - PRANKS: In 1963, the girls discuss that Nicky and his friends had gone to a cemetary and that he probably had stole the rose he gave his girlfriend off a grave. Later, his friend talks about hanging a stuffed dummy of their principal somewhere.

Other costumes seen in the episode include - At Liberty High: maid, prisoner, frankenstien, hippie guy, Indian girl and Robin Hood. Trick or Treaters: Pinhead, Princess, Saloon girl, Cinderella, medieval queen, medieval knight, Teenage Mutant Nija Turtle, clown and a lion.

| | Dialogue To Die For | |

Brian: "I can't believe people are walking around dressed like idiots."
Angela: "I wouldn't talk."

Angela (VO): 'Does anybody know Jordan Catalano? That question, like, got to me. I mean, I'd had seven conversations with him, and one really bad kiss, and one amazing one. But did I, like, know him?'

Angela (VO): 'When someone dies young, it's like they stay that way forever, like a vampire.'

Rayanne: "Watch out for those dead guys. They'll break your heart."

Angela: "I mean, contact him? How? I have enough trouble contacting living guys. I don't even believe in ghosts."

Brian: "Um, excuse me. Can I talk to Rickie, please?"
Rayanne: "What am I? A receptionist?"

Sharon: "Promise me you won't let boys drain all the fun out of your life."

Patty: "We'll be late."
Graham: "I'll be quick." [Doorbell rings.] "I'm not that quick."

| | Dialogue To Bury | |

Rayanne: "You were scoping my legs and you let the stupid door shut! You must be so hard up!"
Why would Rayanne diss Brian by saying he was desperate for checking her out? Thats a diss on herself.

| | Pop! Goes the Culture | |

Danielle: "Mom, I can't be catwoman. Sheri Hickey is going to be catwoman. And she's, like, developed."
In DC Comic's Batman series, Catwoman is the sexy cat-burglar alter ego of Selina Kyle. In 2004, hot new movie version of the character emerged played by Halle Berry.

Graham: "Who's scarier than Madonna?" Danielle: "Dad, Madonna peaked."
How untrue Danielle's statement is. Madonna has been in the business for over two decades now and is still coming out with hits. From her first in 1983 ('Holiday') to her latest in 2003 ('Hollywood') - it doesn't look like this pop icon is going anywhere.

Costume: Ms. Lerner - Obi-Wan Kenobi
Obi-Wan Kenobi is a Jedi Knight in the fictional Star Wars universe. He taught both Anakin and Luke Skywalker in the ways of the Force. In the films, Episodes IV-VI, Kenobi is played by Alec Guinness, in Episodes I-III, Ewan McGregor stars in the role.

Rayanne: "They're actual. It's not a costume. They're, like, real." Rickie: "Oh, look, mohair!"
Mohair is a silk-like fabric made from the hair of the Moe, an goat native to New Zealand. It is durable, light and warm. The word was adopted into English before 1570 from the Arabic mukhayyar, a type of haircloth, literally 'choice', from khayyana, 'he chose'.

Sharon: "Our moms even know about him. It was the Halloween right before Kennedy got shot."
John F. Kennedy was the 35th president of the USA, sworn into office on January 20th 1961. He was, during the time he served, perhaps the most popular president in history. On November 22nd 1963, JFK was killed by an assassin's bullet as his motorcade wound through Dallas, Texas.

Shopkeeper: "Please don't say you want Power Rangers. We're out. Everybody's out."
Mighty Morphin Power Rangers is a children's TV and film series originally broadcast in Japan as Kyoryo Sentai Ju Ranger (translates to Dinosaur Task Force Beast Rangers). The first episode aired in 1993 and it became instantly popular with kids. It's been through many incarnations since the first three seasons, Mighty Morphin Power Rangers Zeo, Turbo, Space, Lost Galaxy, Lightspeed, Time Force, Nija Storm and Dino Thunder.

Shopkeeper: "Today's Halloween. Yesterday, I could have got you Bill and Hillary."
Bill Clinton was the 42nd president of the USA, serving from 1993 to 2001. During his administration, the US enjoyed more peace and economic well being than at any time in it's history. However, he was te second president to ever be impeached and he was surrounded in controversy over his personal indiscretions. Hillary Clinton is his highly criticized wife. She stood by him through all the scandals and in 2000 she became the first ever first lady to win an elected office in the US and the first woman senator in New York.

Prop: Magazine - Rolling Stone
Rolling Stone is a music magazine that was founded in San Francisco in 1967. it embraced and reported on the hippie counter culture during the late 1960's and 1970's. By the 1980's it had become institutionalized and adopted ideas (like employee drug testing) that had been shunned by the magazine in the early years. In the early 2000's, they began losing money and revenue due to the rapid rise of young mens magazines such as Maxim and FHM, so they reinvented themselves, targeting a lower age group and they now offer more sex oriented content. The issue seen is # 683, June 2, 1994 with Kurt Cobain on the cover.

Rayanne: [Looking at magazine w/Kurt Cobain on cover] "Oh, I still can't look at him."
Kurt Cobain was the lead singer and guitarist of the grunge band Nirvana. After years of obscurity, Nirvana suddenly exploded onto to music scene, seemingly changing the music industry overnight with their song, 'Smells Like Teen Spirit'. Kurt struggled with his new found fame and relied on drugs to keep him going. On April 5th, 1994, he died from an apparent self-inflicted gun shot wound at the age of 27. He left behind his wife, Courtney Love and their young daughter, Francis Bean.

Ruthie: "That's the last time I let them use my 45's for a hop."
The 45 rpm vinyl record was first manufactured on March 31st, 1949. Created by RCA as an anti-competetive movie against Columbia, who had just introduced the new microgroove 33 1/3 rpm album. The mass production of 45 rpm records stopped in the early 1990's, however some vinyl records are still manufactured today.

A hop, or sock hop, is basically a dance, often held in a school gym or cafeteria. The term was coined in the US during the 1950's, following the growth in popularity of rock and roll music.

Ruthie: "They scratched my Mathis and my Ricky Nelson."
Johnny Mathis made his way onto the music scene in the mid-1950's. His first album was a collection of jazz oriented renditions of popular standards. When it didn't sell very well, Columbia switched him to singing romantic ballads and from there he had numerous hit songs including 'Wonderful, Wonderful', 'Chances Are', 'Misty', 'Too Much, Too Little, Too Late' and 'I'm Coming Home'.

Ricky (now just Rick) Nelson was one of the first American teen idols. He began his career on his parent's TV show, 'The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet' and after singing a song on the show, he was offered a recording contract. His hits include 'Travelin Man', 'Hello Mary Lou', 'Unchained Melody' and 'Young Emotions'.

Nicky: "I like this song." Angela: "I know." Nicky: "You know, I heard Elvis was only our age when he recorded this."
By 1956, Elvis was an international sensation. His talent, good looks, sensuality, charisma and good humor endeared him to millions, as did the humility and human kindness he demonstrated throughout his life. Known the world over by his first name, he is regarded as one of the most important figures of 20th century pop culture. Elvis was 19 years old when he recorded Blue Moon at SUN records in 1954.

Prop: Book - The Diary of Anne Frank
There is a copy of this book in Angela's room on her dresser, she'd been reading it since episode one where it was referenced a few times. Annelies Marie "Anne" Frank (June 12, 1929 - March 1945) was a Jewish girl who wrote a diary while hiding with her family from the Nazis in Amsterdam during World War II. Her family was betrayed and they were transported to German concentration camps, after which all but Anne's father Otto died. After the war, her diary was published, making her world-famous.

Patty: "I mean, what is the deal with Rapunzel anyway? Is she a princess? Is she under a spell? What? I mean, all anyone ever remembers is that, that she has this really long hair and she was locked up in some kind of a..." Graham: "Prison. She let her hair down, and he climbs, and climbs, and climbs..."
Rapunzel was locked at the top of a tower which had no door or stairs, deep in the forrest by the witch who raised her. One day a prince overheard the witch calling, "Rapunzel, Rapunzel, let down your golden hair." and saw her climb up the tower. Once he tried it, Rapunzel and the prince fell in love and after some heartache they finally get a happy ending.

Ms. Lerner: "Today we're going to be visiting Mr. Dickens' world of dark factories, grey skies, lost souls..."
Charles John Huffam Dickens (2/7/1812 - 6/9/1870) is a famous British novelist from the Victorian era. The popularity of his books during his lifetime and in present days is demonstrated by the fact that none of his novels has ever gone out of print. Some of his best known works include Great Expectations, David Copperfield, Oliver Twist, Nicholas Nickleby and A Christmas Carol.

It doesn't seem possible that Patty, Angela and Danielle would all be able to fit into the same flapper dress costume.

During the first classroom scene, there is a girl in a maid costume that walks up and sits in the desk behind Angela twice with no time for her to have gotten up and come back.

Sharon shuts the door on her tail when she runs to catch Danielle.

| | Creep Show | |

Bess Armstrong was in Jaws 3-D in 1983 and was also in a Tales From the Crypt episode in 1992.

Tom Irwin was in the 1999 remake of The Haunting.

Jared Leto has been in a few thrillers including Urban Legends (1998), American Psycho (2000) and Panic Room (2002).

Devon Gummersall was also in the Felicity Halloween episode, Spooked.

One of Devon Odessa's first roles was in the 1989 horror movie, Pumpkinhead.

Lindsay Slone, who plays one of the girls from 1963 was a regular cast member of Sabrina the Teenage Witch from 1997 to 1999 was, of course, in the Halloween episode from each season.

The real life high school they used to shoot scenes at is University High School in Los Angeles which is the same location where they filmed scenes in the movie Jawbreaker.

| | Misc Notes | |

The German title for this episode is "Die Geister, Die Man Ruft" which translates to The Ghosts You Called For.

This is the first of the episodes shot months after the first batch and it was filmed out of sequence as well. Episodes 8 and 10 were shot in March of 1994 and this one (episode 9) was shot in September 1994. The cast, of course, went through pyhsical changes during the 6 month shooting break, most notable is Jared's changed hair and Lisa's growth spurt.

Jordan's teacher threatens to get him kicked out of school if he doesn't start showing up to class, in real life, Jared Leto left school in the 10th grade. One of his first websites reported that it was one of his biggest regrets but when asked about it by Details magazine in 1997, he said "No. Never. I think public school is the dark ages. And they neglect to say I went back."

Nicky Driscoll shares the same last name as Diane Driscoll who is credited as an assistant to the producers.

The ticket that Angela finds in the pocket of her costume says:
Class of '63
Halloween Hop
Liberty High School Gym
Admit One

Photography was also one of Devon Gummersall's hobbies according to his bio from the intro of an AOL chat.

Elvis' song Blue Moon is used through out the episode and ironically, in 1994, Halloween fell during the phase of a blue moon. A "blue moon," is the second full moon within a calendar month, it occurs infrequently, hence the term "once in a blue moon" that describes an event that is unusual or happens only rarely.

Angela: "I don't even believe in ghosts." Angela may not be a believer but Claire was at some time, according to an interview in Movieline magazine from December 1995, Claire said that she started seeing a therapist off and on when she was a little girl because she thought she saw ghosts.

Angela lies to her parents and winds up spending the night at her high school. Aparently Bess Armstrong wasn't much different when she was younger, "I was the queen of the sneak out," she told The Fresno Bee in December of 1994. "I never got caught. When I got back home, I just slept in the basement--easy! ... That's the way adolescence is, -- doing things you probably shouldn't, and mostly getting away with it, and learning from your mistakes. That's why I like the show, because it presents teenagers realistically, without judging them."

The two artists songs that are used in this episode are Elvis and Shelley Fabares who played Elvis's girlfriend in three of his movies, he once claimed that she was his favorite co-star.

In one of the October 1994 issues of People Weekly, Claire is quoted, "I was to dress up as a drag queen for Halloween." It also says her reason for this costume choice is because of her recent viewing of the movie Priscilla, Queen of the Desert.
